Sega Exec: iPhone’s Popularity “Substantial”
8/11/2008 11:50:00 AM
In the month since it opened, Apple’s App Store has received some surprisingly heavy traffic—to the tune of more than 60 million downloads, Steve Jobs told the Wall Street Journal Online. One of the companies that’s reaping the rewards is Sega, maker of Super Monkey Ball. The $9.99 iPhone version of the game has been out for 20 days and has already sold more than 300,000 copies. “That's a substantial business," Simon Jeffery, president of Sega's U.S. division, told the WSJ. "It gives iPhone a justifiable claim to being a viable gaming platform."

Weekly Roundup 8/11: Things Are Looking Up
8/11/2008 11:32:00 AM
Even if you’re not a fan of Madden, there’s actually a decent selection of games to keep your thumbs busy. On the DLC tip there’s Bionic Commando Rearmed and the inevitable Rock Band update. Wii Owners have a chance to download Strong Bad’s debut episode, if they’re not busy with Line Rider 2. Otherwise, Tropic Thunder opens alongside the CG Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature. That might be worth checking out if only to see what Jabba’s son looks like. We predict a slug with a backwards baseball cap. And a slingshot.

Weekend Warriors - 8/8
8/8/2008 5:35:00 PM

Well after another week, we’re off for the weekend. This means we leave an office filled with games and go to our homes filled with games. Whether it’s shooting some dudes, solving some puzzles or hitting home runs, games are our favorite source of entertainment (besides the latest hilarious episode of Fox News) and we plan on playing and we hope you do to. See you online!

Well with the impeding release of Rock band 2 on the Xbox 360 in Spetember, I’ve been working on my drum skills. The Hard-Expert leap is much tougher than it is on guitar and mix that with my learning real drums at the same time and there is much confusion going on. I will also be feeding my addiction to Geometry Wars 2. The passive mode is so incredibly addicting that I find myself playing it for hours at a time. Me chasing Reiner’s 130 million points seems a bit futile but fun nonetheless. Finally, the free update for Battlefield: Bad Company is up and it adds the classic Conquest mode from the PC Battlefield games. Cheers!

I finished up Braid last night (amazing!), so it’s back to the Geometry Wars 2 grind. Reiner had the nerve to post some crazy scores, and now I have to beat them all. We’ll see how that goes—his Pacifism score is right around the 130 million mark. Yikes. I’m also going to try to finish Siren: Blood Curse this weekend, too. That might be a bit tougher though, since it’s probably not the greatest idea to play that one while my young son toddles around. It’s a game best played in the dead of night anyway…

Unfortunately, I don’t have much time to myself this weekend. Since Bryan generously volunteered me to have a Game Informer BBQ in September, I need to get my butt I gear and finish remodeling my kitchen. Yeay for stripping paint and staining wood. When I do have a moments down time, I am going to get back to Braid. That game could keep me entertained for hours.

th_epin_kpoo: Time to finish up Assassin's Creed, though it has really gotten boring for me then I think I am going to play some of my casual games and multiplayer games that I have avoided for awhile before I start Bioshock or Oblivion.

Olympic Fever Infects WoW
8/8/2008 11:56:00 AM
If you’re doing your best to avoid any and all Olympic-themed activities this month, you can cross World of Warcraft off your list of refuges. Blizzard has added some just-generic-enough-to-avoid-getting-sued content that’s tied into the MMO’s Battleground PvP modes. The Spirits of Competition reward Battleground participants with a pair of prizes, one easy to acquire and another that’s significantly more rare. Horde and Alliance players can score special rare tabards by simply playing one of WoW’s Battleground mode—win, lose or whatever. If you want the event’s special pet, you’re going to have to be on the winning team. Each victory comes with a chance at randomly winning a gold medal, which summons the dragon-like beast.
