Raúl presents national flag to
baseball team for the Olympic Games
President Raúl Castro arrived at Havana’s Latin
American stadium to meet the Cuban baseball
pre-selection team which will compete in the
forthcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.
The president presented the national flag to
ballplayer Alexander Malleta, and conversed with
each one of the athletes about the challenge this
competition represents for sport on the island,
reported Cuban television in its primetime edition
on Saturday 28.
“All of you know what the Cuban people are expecting
from you and all of us know that you can do it.
We’ll see each other in August. Well done!”
commented Raúl.
Frederich Cepeda read the athletes’ statement of
commitment to the Cuban people.
José Ramón Fernández, vice president of the Council
of State and president of the Cuban Olympic
Committee, highlighted the human quality and
sporting talents of the baseball players.
Also present during the presentation ceremony were
Christian Jiménez, president of the Cuban Sports
Institute (INDER) and other Cuban sports leaders.
Previously, Raúl had attended the national
pre-selection’s training session.
On Sunday 28, the representatives of Cuban baseball
set off on an international tour that will take them
to Holland and Asia as part of their training for
the Olympic Games in Beijing, where they play their
first game against Japan on August 13.
