League: Hochuli to be downgraded, rule to be reviewed

NEW YORK -- Ed Hochuli's acknowledgement that he erred on a call late in Sunday's San Diego-Denver game will mean lower grades for one of the NFL's highest-profile referees.

"Officials are held accountable for their calls. They are graded on every play of every game," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "Ed has been an outstanding official for many years, but he will be marked down for this call. Under our evaluation system, an official's grades impact his status for potentially working the playoffs and ultimately whether or not he is retained."

The play occurred with the Broncos at the Chargers 1-yard-line in the final minute. Denver quarterback Jay Cutler dropped back to pass, the ball slipped out of his hands, bounced off the grass and into the arms of San Diego linebacker Tim Dobbins.

Hochuli ruled it an incomplete pass. Replay ruled it a fumble, but it was spotted at the 10-yard line, where the ball hit the ground, and given to Denver because the rules did not permit possession to be awarded to San Diego because the whistle had blown.

Denver went on to score, convert a 2-point conversion and win 39-38.

The play also is likely to be reviewed in the offseason by the league's competition committee, which normally reviews all controversial plays.

"It's going to require a great deal of discussion," said Titans coach Jeff Fisher, the cochairman of the competition committee. "It's happened at times. It happened in a game against us at Indianapolis years ago. ... When the whistle blows and the pass is ruled incomplete, there's just no way currently that you can award possession."

For example, until March 2007, down by contact plays were not reviewable. That rule was changed so that they were reviewable, and if a fumble occurred even after the whistle blew, the team recovering it got possession

San Diego coach Norv Turner said he spoke with NFL officials Monday and that the Chargers sent in video of the plays in question.

"As for things that occurred during the game, in my mind, they're done," Turner said. "We sent the plays in to the league that we had in question. We expect to get a response back. Anything that we talk about or anything that is discussed in terms of any of the rules or any of the calls isn't going to change the outcome of that game. That game is going to be 39-38, forever."

Denver coach Mike Shanahan said honest mistakes always happen in the NFL.

"This was the best crew that we have had in the last 20 crews I have graded," Shanahan said. "They did a heck of a job. Every game that you see that is within a point or a field goal over the last couple years, it may be a call or a non-call that wasn't right, but that is the nature of this game. You have to find a way to win.

"We still had the ball at third-and-10 and had to get it into the end zone. Third-and-10 and then fourth-and-4. We still had to make a 2-point conversion," Shanahan said. "It wasn't like somebody gave us the touchdown. You have to go out there and still get it done."

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wasn't surprised that Hochuli was involved.

"That particular official gets a lot of criticism. He's a highly criticized official in the NFL," Jones said.

"Nothing can be done. I understand that after that whistle blows, you can't speculate, `Well, did everybody get the best shot at recovering the ball if some of them heard the whistle and some of them didn't?' "

I have always been against the use of instant replay in sports.  I think human error is apart of everything we do from medicine, to constuction to sports.  I think replay gives an uneven balance as well.  Only certain calls can be reveiwed, so if you get screwed on a call that really can not be reviewed ie Chargers, then i ...(more)

One play beat your team? Try a piss poor display of defense. Yep there was a bad call and it gave Norv an out, but this team is under achieving yet again (for now) and Marty never should have been fired. NT is a great assistant coach but in my opinion a terrible head coach. You lost this game in the first qrt ...(more)

The quick whistle is to keep NFL quarterbacks alive because the NFL is a business and quarterbacks are the multi-million dollar, jersey selling, money making machines. Image a quarterback like Philip Rivers being lost for the season, or a career, chasing down a ball that's not whistled dead and later determined (by review) ...(more)

One of the drawbacks to instant replay is that it cannot solve all the 'human error' in officiating a game.  Imagine if NBA foul calls were reviewable?  Perhaps football should go back to the way it used to be.  A call, good or bad, stands as called on the field.

I hate when the flow of a drive in the last couple minutes of an NFL game is disrupted by a booth revi ...(more)

Ed is considered one of the premier refs in the NFL. Rarely if ever does he miss a call.

Human error is human error and its gonna happen to the best of them. You can't just keep him from refing the playoffs for that blown call.

Anyways...I agree with the fact that it is TOO LATE! It happened and its stupid to go back and change the outcome now.

leave it to the Chargers to cry AGAIN because they lost AGAIN.  it's a sport and refs make mistakes.  what a bunch babies with some of the biggest mouths in the NFL.  even the media is defending them.  i've seen every channel that covers sports crying with them.  ok, so you got jipped.  are you happy now?  ...(more)

The Broncos didn't beat the Chargers, Ed Hochuli did and he even admitted it. The Chargers should have won this game and I dare an REAL Broncos fan to say otherwise. The whole world knows it now. Yes, the Chargers D is terrible and yes they should have made a stop after that pla ...(more)

It was a bad call. Chargers want to win the game? Stop the touchdown and the two point conversion which happened after the bad call.

Ive said this more than once if you are going to use the instant replay then EVERY PLAY SHOULD BE REVIEWED! not just the ones that are challenged or blown dead I mean college has figured it out for the most part why cant the NFL.

The Chargers might have been the most affected ...(more)

Anytime the ball hits the turf, let play continue until possession is established. This way, under reveiw, all wrongs can be addressed. Players will be allowed to decide games not policies.

The Real Story is the Broncos absolutley shredding the Chargers secondary. Cromarti being exposed with 18 catches on him LOL. Cutler wasn't even hit on the fumble, it isn't like the Chargers did anything great to cause a fumble LOL. Shanny  Gave you guys a change by ...(more)

Before the NFL of recent years, I use to know -or- I thought I knew what a catch, throw, and fumble were.  Now, I have no idea.  When I was a kid, 8-20 of us could get together, pick sides, and determine who had the better team.  The NFL with billions of dollars tied up in state-of-the-art technology, players, coaches, stadiums, etc. and they still can't figure ...(more)

Ok so aside from the obvious blown calls which cost the Chargers the game, let's talk about another huge issue in Sunday's Loss: Antonio Cromartie.

I can't recall the last time I have seen someone get burned so badly in a game, can you? ...(more)
