Monday musings

Monday thoughts

Mike Shanahan got away with one late Sunday.

What was he thinking going for two with 24 seconds left in the game down by 1 to the San Diego Chargers? The Broncos cut the lead to 37-36 and Shanahan put up two fingers.

The Broncos went for two, got it on a pass from Jay Cutler to rookie Eddie Royal and ended up winning the game.

Shanahan will be saluted for his aggressive play.

He should be ripped.

Why put it all one play when you have an overtime to decide things? Lucky for Shanahan it worked. If not, he'd be taking a beating.

The Broncos are now 2-0 because of that play, but it's still not the right move. I've always hated when coaches get saluted for making a call like he did. Yet the national media proclaimed him a hero the past couple of days.

No, Mike. You were stupid. You just got away with it.

Quick hits

----Rookie defensive end Chris Long will be a good player in time for the Rams. He plays hard all the time and got his first career sack Sunday against the Giants. I kept my binoculars on him a lot and he plays with a ferocity you want from your players. He will be a handful down the road for opposing tackles.

---Big props to Matt Cassel for handling things Sunday for the Patriots against the Jets. But all I can think about is that we now have another manage-the-game quarterback. Oh, boy.

---I hate to say I told you so -- no, I really don't -- but I warned you that David Garrard is not an elite quarterback. There was a rush to judgment about him after last season and now the star talk has quickly subsided. He has three interceptions already this season, the same number he had in 2007. What has to be even more troubling is that he hasn't been spinning his head the way he did late last season reading the field. Did the Jaguars make a mistake by giving him a $60-million contract extension this spring? It does beg the question: Why didn't they wait until midseason to see if he was a one-hit wonder?

---For a coach who has the biggest playbook in the league, Rams offensive coordinator Al Saunders sure doesn't call a good game. I think he outthinks himself. The Rams don't look in synch on offense.

---Don't even ask about the defense.

----The Giants have the makings of something special on offense. They have so many parts to work with, so many different styles. If they have another big season, isn't it time somebody gives coordinator Kevin Gilbride another shot at a head-coaching job? Gilbride's experience as coach of the Chargers didn't work out, but I think he's mature and would be better the second time around.

---Who says you can't pass the ball and win. We had six passers throw for over 300 yards Sunday. Of those six, only San Diego's Philip Rivers lost. And his team was hosed by a bad call by the referee Ed Hochuli.

---It was so windy in Cincinnati Sunday it made the passing games of Carson Palmer and Kerry Collins make people think Vince Young was actually playing for the Titans. Oh, wait. He's out with an injured knee -- and a damaged psyche.

---The Minnesota Vikings should have signed Byron Leftwich when they had a chance. He was strongly recommended to Brad Childress, but he passed. Leftwich would have been an upgrade over Tarvaris Jackson. That's for sure.

---The Colts have to be thrilled with the emergence of second-year receiver Anthony Gonzalez. He had nine catches for 137 yards against the Vikings. Marvin Harrison had one catch. Is it a matter of time before Gonzalez takes the job?

---Charles Woodson got screwed out of a Pro Bowl appearance last season. So now he's going to do what needs to be done to get there this season, rack up interceptions. He had two, one returned for a touchdown, as the Packers beat the Lions Sunday. Woodson is one of the best cover players in the league, yet seems to get snubbed for some reason. He claims there's a bias against him. It's hard to argue with that. He'll get to Hawaii this season. You wait and see.

---The Chiefs used receiver Marques Hagans at quarterback for five plays. Does somebody want to tell Herm Edwards this isn't college football? Why can't teams just play it conventional? The gimmicks don't work.

Monday musings

I agree, Mike Shanahan got away with it on Sunday, but isn't it nice to occasionally see someone try something different? He's got a lot of faith in Jay Cutler, and he clearly trusted his offense a lot more than his defense and special teams coverage in the event that it went to overtime.

Can someone tell me how the Chargers allowed Brandon Marshall to get 18 catches? I mean seriously, it was just ridiculous how he was always open. People will accuse Cutler of locking on to his favourite target, but if the guy is constantly open, then you'd want to get the ball in the hands of your best player.

The refereeing call aside, the Broncos Chargers game was simply fantastic entertainment. The Broncos were unstoppable in the first half, then San Diego dominated the second half - almost 1000 yards of offense! As a self-proclaimed passing junkie, Prisco must have been in heaven.

RE: Shanahan and 2 points

Uh, yeah, and if they go to overtime and lose the coin flip they lose the game.

The last six possessions by San Diego? TD, TD, TD, FG, FG, TD.... Not exactly an inspired effort by the Denver defense and special teams.

I think it was a calculated 50/50 move to win in regulation with his best unit on the field...Now maybe they win the flip, and if so they win the game, but this way they didn't have to worry about it.

But then, that's why you write columns and he wears 3 Superbowl rings (one as OC of the niners).

>Lucky for Shanahan it worked. If not, he'd be taking a beating.

This is precisely why fans wish coaches would go for it more.  Too often, coaches base their decisions on how it will play in tomorrow's papers (or Prisco's column) rather than looking at the actual situation.  Sometimes the situation will call for kicking the PAT, but not always and I think yesterday was an example.

The Chargers had pretty much handled the Broncos defense in the second half, and they'd shut out the Broncos offense.  Rather than taking the risk that his defense would be first on the field in overtime, Shanahan figured he'd end the game if he could.  Moreover, by making the decision before the drive started, he challenged his offensive team to make the plays needed to win.

And, though the decision was made when the Broncos drive started, I can't help but think the "fumble" call helped clinch it because it must have deflated the Chargers D.  With those conditions, Shanahan took a reasonable gamble and was rewarded for it.  Had the situation been different, say with the Broncos rallying from 21 points down and the their defense bottling up the Chargers O, perhaps he decides differently.

I like Shanahan's call to go for two for a different reason.  Along with the display of testicular fortitude in going for the win in regulation, Shanahan probably knew that the touchdown was a second gift from the gods of incompent officiating -- who had already jobbed the Chargers earlier on the phantom fumble.  By going for two, Shanahan gave the Chargers a gentlemanly chance to make a play for the win, which is more than can be said for the refs and replay crew.

Ceme on Prisco.  This isn't the NHL, you don't get brownie points like the nfl for pushing a game to Overtime.  Shanahan made a gut decision and it paid off.  After losing 4 in a row to another team, when you have a chance to seal the deal right then and there, you take that chance.  It was the right call, whether or not it was successful.  You leave it all on the field.

Absolutely a joke

I know...I know...the referees never decide the outcome of a game.

What happened Sunday in Denver is inexcusable.  It wasn't just the blown fumble call at the end...or the mysterious "malfunctioning" replay booth on the Chargers first drive...or the ridiculous amounts of automatic first downs awarded to the Broncos.  No...it was everything.  How an NFL officiating crew be so one sided and so wrong in a game is beyond me.  Chris Chambers' phantom holding call negating a huge run play...Cromartie's facemask penalty for his hand brushing the backside of the receiver's helmut...the missed holding calls on the Denver O-line.  I could go on for days...and I only watched the game once!  I hate to think of everything else that isn't fresh in my mind after fuming all day over that debauchery of a game.

I know Ed Hochuli has been a respected official in the league for years...but what happened with that officiating crew on Sunday is absolutely unacceptable.  Those guys should never wear the zebra stripes again in the NFL.  They may have a place in Pop Warner leagues, but that's about it.

I completely agree.  Shanahan gave the Chargers a 50/50 chance to decide that game so why does Prisco believe Shanahan should be ripped for the call?

2 Pointer

If you believe you have a greater chance to complete a two point conversion than to win in OT - go for two.  Why is this so hard to get?

If you think there is a 51% chance of executing the two and a 50% chance of winning in OT - go for two!!!!

The powers that be have decided that the prudent option is playing OT, so anyone who does anything else is labeled stupid without consideration of whether or not the chances of the W may have improved.

Seriously?  OK, they shouldn't have even scored to begin with, but why the hate for the 2-pts?  Would you rather take your chances on losing a coin flip and losing on a FG?  Right call in my book, say the same thing if they missed it.  The offense was working; the defense wasn't.  plain as that.
