[-]Following on from Sarah Palin debate: Which mother (in the public eye) do you most admire and why? Me: Elizabeth Edwards.
26 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]Cynthia Nixon, for getting involved in her kids' school and acting like a normal person.
[ Reply | Options ]I'm on the fence about Edwards. First, I have an issue with the fact that she talks about having done fertility treatments, but is vague on the donor egg issue, which feels a little dishonest to me. Also, I don't admire her for standing by her husband during/after the affair. Bad role model for young women in that regard.

[-]How many people have life insurance? How about a will? We have neither. 2 kids - 6 and 3. Haven't had the time.

Life insurance and disability insurance on dh. Nothing on me. We have a will. Really had to nag dh about the life insurance. Now that so many of our friends in their late 40s and early fifties are having health crises, he gets why I was so adamanant. Don't wait until you are uninsurable.

[-]Does your 2 yo fall asleep in bed/crib or need to be walked around. My 25 mo will only fall asleep for nanny in stroller, but will fall asleep at night for me in bed. She's been getting tough so trying to decide if inconsistent routines throws her off.
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]by 2 yrs a kid should be able to fall asleep in her/his crib. this is no longer an issue of babies being different etc. you need to teach your toddler how to sleep.
[ Reply | Options ]I posted above about crib training and I want to take that back. I was letting personal opinion get in the way. Whatever you are comfortable with when it comes to your child is what you should do. Inconsistent routines are definitly difficult when it comes to sleep patterns. Urge the nanny to do whatever you think is for the best of your child; she needs to be on the same page as you.

[-]I have a really small house and my BIL(dh's husband) has a giant 5 bed/5bath house. Parents are in town is it unresonalbe that they stay with him instead of with us. It is only 15 minutes away so they are coming here for a few dinners and maybe an overnight. SIL is not happy- firgue she got the big house she gets the inlaws. Am I being unfair.

We don't have a guest room so if I was in your situation I'd definitely think the inlaws would rather stay in the house with the designated guest room rather than displace one of our kids. Is SIL unhappy b/c she doesn't like the inlaws? Does she think you guys are taking advantage?

If they're taking them every single time I'd say it's unfair even if they do have a big house.

Then it's fine but I would think in all fairness that you should take them the next time. There's more to hosting than just having a big house.
[ Reply | Options ]np: i disagree. both sets of grandparents stay in hotels when they visit us. we have no room for guests. i guess the question is: if bil and sil didn't live so close, where would the inlaws stay? should they get a hotel room b/c sil is annoyed by their visits? is it op's fault that her house doesn't accomodate guests very well? especially not one in a wheelchair.
[ Reply | Options ]Maybe they don't have the money. My mother and father and I use to stay at my sisters tiny house. It is possible. If I was the one with the bigger house I wouldn't want them staying there everytime just because I had the bigger house.
[ Reply | Options ]np: it's not exactly fair but guess what? life's not fair. maybe op thinks it's unfair that her sil/bil get to live in a big house all the time and she is always in cramped quarters. i don't know. i just know that if i had plenty of guest space i would never expect my brother to host my parents in his 2 bedroom apt. i may not like it but i could see the reasonableness of my parents always staying in our house.

My sister has a large house and happily hosts both our family and her in laws. When it is our family we help with the cooking and cleaning etc.. She has to do very little- It great of her since the whole family can fit comfortably and the kids have room to play!

[-]Where is the best place to find a nanny? We are looking to find a job for our nanny of eight years. Years ago, people used to use the Irish Echo. I put a posting on Craig's list but no luck. Any other options??
6 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]we are trying to place our nanny too. I think the summer is a bad time since many get rid of their nanny come Sept when kids are in school full time. My nanny has been on 4 interviews and the parents have all been psycho crazy wanting her to work M-F 12-13 hour days, cook, clean and babysit for $12 an hour
[ Reply | Options ]my sister and i are looking for a nanny for our infants starting in september. think she can handle "twins"?

[-]Is it customary to interview the same potential nanny more than once? Did you have "trial days" or a "trial period"?
2 replies [ Reply | Watch | Options ]I have had more than one interview with parents and have had a trial period with previous jobs. I didn't have a problem with it. I actually respected the fact that the parents cared enough to find out who was taking care of their children before they signed a contract. The trial period is also great because it is not only beneficial for the parent, but the nanny as well; the nanny has the same amount of time to decide if it is the type of job that she can actually handle long term. Good luck! : )

[-]Not sure if this is totally disgusting, totally funny, or both: you vote. I had put my boys to bed (9 & 100, they share a room) and I heard hysterical laughter. I went in to investigate and saw that they had put the star projector to interesting use. It reflects stars onto the ceiling and ds was making "shadow puppets" on the ceiling with his penis.
