I heard today that Roosevelt Hospital's labor and delivery ward have been overcrowded for the last year since a nearby hospital closed its ldw. Does anyone have experience with this?

    • I hope not. I'm due to deliver there in 6 wks and don't want to give birth in the ER

    • Not sure, haven't delivered there in almost 2 years but I had a friend do so in the birthing center this summer and there was no mention, but perhaps that's not effected.

      • I met someone yesterday who said that she had to go to the triage department there bc she was dehydrated and that there were pregnant women who couldn't get beds bc the hospital was so full. A nurse said it has been like that for the last yr. I delivered there 2 years ago and had planned to again in the spring.

          • np: that's not for everyone. Only way I would give birth at home is if I didn't have a choice but too many things could happen during labor. I like the safe than sorry approach

            • it's true, too many things can happen... like non-medically-indicated induction, augmentation, artificial rupture of membranes, being strapped to a bed on a monitor, unnecessary c-section, unnecessary NICU stay... you're so right! So much CAN happen.

              • sorry you sound like you have no experience with emergencies. Things happen and minutes count. If you have no problem giving birth at home that's your choice but don't spread ignorant comments like emergencies don't happen because they do. Just thank your lucky stars you have been lucky and haven't had to experience something bad

                • LOL. I'm an RN, so that's hardly the case--and I've seen way, way more iatrogenic "emergencies" with regard to birth than homebirth emergencies. (Do you know what iatrogenic means?)

                  • LOL back at you and your sarcastic and obnoxious tone. Yes I do know what it means but I couldn't care what you have seen. I know what I prefer (as I initially posted that it's my preference) and I prefer to be safe than sorry. I know that if a mom or baby crashes, I want the Drs and Meds there. I don't want to have to wait for an ambulance to get to me. As an RN (as you claim) you know that during an emergency, every second counts

                • omg. not even close. She terrifies me to my bones, and is hardly some big homebirth advocate. You make no sense.

                • np-just out of curiosity, why do you think it's "wacko" to say that hospital birth frequently involves unnecessary medical intervention? Do you honestly think that isn't true?

                  • nnp: ita. With my first I thought the natural birth ppl were wacko but after induction/epi/episiotomy I was like, there's got to be something better. Natural with #2 and it was so much better.

        • np: I'm 34 wks pg and when I was 25 wks pg I had scare..my Dr sent me to Roosevelt. When I got to LnD there were 2 other women there. I was taken care of right away and was there for about 4 hrs. I think it may be the luck of the draw..depends when you go. I don't think it will be like this all the time. BTW this was in Mid July

    • delivered there 4 yrs ago and 1 wk ago - I thought the ward was VASTLY better this time. there were lots of women delivering but we were triaged to rooms appropriately and I was never without a nurse when I needed one

    • np: it was very crowded when I delivered there. I highly recommend trying to get a private room too. However, labor and delivery care was EXCELLENT. there were long waits for nursing care post partum. You just have to keep buzzing the nurses a lot to get assistance. Dont' worry it is 2 nights of your life. Good luck.

      • Same - two years ago it was SO crowded. The delivery nurses could not have been better. Triage was disorganized, and you had to buzz a lot for drugs. I liked my roommate and DH was happy to go get some rest at home and come back in the morning. It's two nights.

    • I delivered there last summer. It was crowded then. We wanted to get a private room but was 6th name on the waiting list for one. But I expect any NYC hospital to be crowded.

      • ^^ditto on the excellent labor & delivery care. i was there for two shifts, and all the nurses were great. nurses in recovery are not as great as the L&D nurses, but it was fine for me. i just wish i had a private room becuase the first roommate was horrible (watching TV and talking on cell phone at 1am!!).
