School of Mathematics and System Sciences has a tradition of strength in a wide range of research areas, a tradition which is being actively enhanced by the current faculty.Here are three great influential areas in our school: Mathematical Finance, Number Theory, Information Security.

1. Mathematical Finance:
The research on Mathematical finance has great influence in the world. There are almost one hundred papers searched by SCI.
The main superiority on three aspects are: non-linear mathematical expectation theory, the theory of backward stochastic
differential equations, optimal control theory.

Brief Introduction
Professor Shige Peng was awarded Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in November 2005, whose 33 papers have been accepted by SCI. Professor Peng is now the head of Mathematics Research Academy and Finance Research Academy of Shandong University. Meanwhile, he is also a member of “Center of Mathematics Research and Education of Talented Person” of State Educational Committee Advanced Mathematics, a member of academic leading group of the third session of mathematics Tianyuan foundation, a member of the 5th session of mathematics appraising group of the State Council Degree Committee, and a member of editorial committee of China Annuals of Mathematics, etc. In the field of control theory, Professor Peng got a general stochastic maximum principle for optimal control problems; in the field of probability theory, he made an essential contribution to the foundation of the theory of backward stochastic differential equations and nonlinear mathematical expectation theory.

2. Number Theory:
It takes breakthrough on the research of analytic theory of numbers and the achievements remain the advanced level in the
world. The main superiorities are: additive prime number theory, classical circle method.

Professor Jianya Liu, Cheung Kong Professor, Director of School of Mathematics and System Sciences, one of the first national famous teachers, has won the “State Scientific Fund for Excellent Youth”. His research interests are additive number theory, automorphic forms, L-functions, etc. His 25 papers have been accepted by SCI.

3. Information Security:
It has caused a sensation all over the world that professor Xiaoyun Wang has succeeded in breaking MD5 in 2004. The main
researches on three aspects are: cryptography theory, cryptography technology, network security.

Brief Introduction
As Cheung Kong Professor, Professor Xiaoyun Wang’s research interests are the design of digital signatures, differential and linear cryptanalysis, the design and analysis of hash functions. Her 25 works have been accepted in SCI. H. B. Yu, G. L. Wang, G. Y. Zhang, X. Y. Wang, The Second Pre-image Attack on MD4, CANS 2005, LNCS 3810. This paper is awarded the honor of “Best Paper Award”.

Other majors also have strong influence:

1. Operations Research and Control Theory: State-level key subject, the research on it including combinatorial optimization,

the graph theory, stochastic control theory, combinatorial problem on bioinformatics has great influence home and abroad.

Academic leaders in their respective field are: Shige Peng, Guojun Li, Guizhen Liu etc.

2. Pure Mathematics: it has mainly influenced these aspects of number theory, complex analysis, functional analysis etc.

Academic leaders in their respective field are: Jianya Liu, Tao Zhan, Hongxun Yi, Peichu Hu etc.

3. Computational Mathematics: The main research are: numerical methods for differential equations, scientific\engineering

computation etc. We’ve got excellent achievements in the application aspect, especially in the numerical simulation of oil

field.

Academic leaders in their respective field are: Danping Yang, Hongxing Rui etc.

4. Applied Mathematics: we have obtained some accomplishments in biomathmatics, biofluid mechanics, fractional dynamics etc.

Mingyu Xu is the representative figure.

5. Probability and Statistics: we have got some achievements in this field home and abroad though it was established

relatively late.
