Comparing Internet Search Engines
Conference paper (January 1999) which explores the databases behind the major Web search engines in terms of the size and scope, the overlap between them, and their change over time. Search engines such as AltaVista, Hotbot, Northern Light, Excite, and Infoseek each rely on their own spider-generated database of millions of fully indexed Web pages, but these are still just a portion of what is available on the Web. This paper identifies some of their unusual behaviour and other peculiarities, to help the information professional to understand the scope, limitations and overlap of these vast databases of Web pages.
