Video Player F.A.Q.
Frequently asked questions concerning the Video Player.

1. What are the 640x480, 320x240, and 2X buttons for?

Set your video preferences to "640x480" to play a high resolution 640x480 pixel video when available. If none is available, a 320x240 video is played instead. If you prefer to watch videos at lower resolutions (recommended for slower connections), select the "320x240" option to play a standard sized 320x240 video. When playing a standard sized video, you can select the "2X" option to instantly zoom the video to the full size of the playback window.

2. What is the Maximize Browser button for?

Selecting the "Maximize Browser" preference automatically expands your browser window to the detected monitor resolution. If enabled, the Video Player automatically sized upon launch. If disabled, the Video Player window is not expanded upon launch. Note: Internet Explorer will only resize the window upon launch while other browsers immediately resize the window upon checking the "Maximize Browser" preference box.

3. What are the Today's Picks and Related Videos tabs for?

The Playlist tabs allow you to toggle between "Hot Picks," the video editor's daily video selections, and "Related Videos," a video playlist related to the video you are currently watching. When the Video Player initially opens it loads the playlist most closely associated with the current video into the "Related Videos" tab. If none is available then the editor's picks are loaded into the "Hot Picks" tab instead. When you select a video from "Hot Picks" the "Related Video" tab will link to the playlist associated with that video. If none is available then the tab is temporarily removed.

4. Why are some videos age-gated?

Some video content is deemed to be unsuitable for younger viewers. As a result these videos are restricted or age-gated, often by publisher request. When you select such a video, you are prompted to enter your birth date into a form. The date must be entered in the format "MM-DD-YYYY" and is saved for approximately 30 days.

5. Why do I get a video advertisement when I select a video in the playlist?

Similar to how commercials appear in between segments of television shows, the Video Player occasionally inserts a video ad between videos. IGN Insider subscribers can disable the advertisements in the player and expand their playlist from 4 to 8 items viewable.

6. Why does my browser prompt me to download the latest version of the Flash Player?

The Video Player is compatible with Macromedia Flash Player version 7 and above. If the computer you're using has an old or corrupt version of the Flash Player installed, you must update your Flash Player plug-in before you can view videos. Flash is a widely used format for video playback.

7. Why does my browser keep generating security alerts?

New Flash security features give users the ability to block access to their computers via the Flash Player. As a result it is sometimes necessary to adjust your Flash Global Security Preferences.
