Project Azeroth -> FAQ

What is Project Azeroth?

Project Azeroth is a collaboration to find out if there is an actual translation system that is being used in World of Warcraft, and if so, document it in a dictionary / lexicon form for others to use.

Huh?

In the game World of Warcraft, there are two different factions, the Alliance and the Horde. Each of these factions has a general language that they use for communcation, namely Alliance Common for the Alliance and Horde Common for the Horde.

Furthermore, there are eight races: Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, Orc, Troll, Tauren, and Undead. Each race also has its individual language that is used for communication.

Whenever a player "talks" in one language, unless the listening player knows that language, it comes out as gibberish.

Or at least it appears to be gibberish.

So there's an actual language at work?

At this time, we're not sure. That's the purpose of this project. Preliminary examinations have found that there is a correlation between the word typed and the text that appears to the listener who does not know the language.
