Reid's My Boys Blog

by Reid Scott
Read Douchebag in the City....
That's the name of tonight's episode. Cue the Nick Gilder song. For those of you who actually got that reference...I owe you an ice cream.

Arlene Sanford, one of our favorite directors, took the helm on this one. We had a great time. Actually it was probably the biggest production we've had so far on the show. We had 5 guest stars (including Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Spencer), huge sets (the club set is insane) and over 50 extras. I mean the gel in my hair on this one probably put us way over budget...just wait.

Sometimes it's funny in an ensemble cast. Often when the story line is about you, you end up doing very little in the episode because it becomes about how the other characters are interpreting or reacting to your character's actions. Such was the case here. There were a lot of sight gags in this one (ie my mud flap belt buckle) so I sort of got to be a walking prop...funny.

This time Brando's just taken the whole sexy bachelor thing waaaaay too far and has fully crossed over into douche-dom. Wait til you see the club he goes too. Cocktail waitresses in giant gerbil balls, fruity drinks, and purple (yes, purple) sunglasses...indoors! It's only fitting that the rest of the gang finally sit him down for what we fondly referred to as the "Douchebag Intervention."

This'll be a My Boys classic for sure. It was written by our creator Betsy Thomas' husband Adrian Wenner and his writing parter Ethan Sandler. So if anyone out there gets totally sick of the word "Douche" after this, blame them. Here's their address...

There's also a really great Sex and the City reference in this one. PJ's old gal pal shows up from New York, with her mini entourage in tow. These girls were hilarious. At the table read we were all blown away by their impression on the ladies from SATC.

This will definitely be an episode that fans will be talking about for some time. We kinda rip on everything in this one. That's what I love about this gig!

Hope ya'll dig it!

That's pretty much what goes on in tonight's episode. It also happens to be the most kick ass Ben and Jerry's ice cream out there, in my humble opinion, but i digress...

Tonight we got the forging of new business partnerships, the return of old flames, Brando get's even douchier, a toy helicopter, and if that weren't enough...Jeremy Sisto!

Yep, Jeremy, who is a long time friend of our Executive Producer Jaime Tarses started watching the show last season and said he was such a fan that he HAD to do an episode with us. Huge compliment for us as far as I'm concerned. And he was great, too. Totally fit in with our gang and was a real pleasure to work with.

Ever though to yourself, "I'd like to see Kenny and Mike together more"? Well here you go. These 2 guys (Mike Bunin and Jaime Kaler) are so funny together it kills me. They're both really accomplished comics and when they get to do scenes together it's hilarious. You'll se what I'm talking about.

And yeah, Brando gets just a little douchier. But be forewarned...this is nothing compared to what's coming later.

Oh, yeah. The toy helicopter. I'm not exactly sure if it made the cut. But there's a scene with Jeremy that we wanted to have a helicopter flying by in the background. Obviously our budget didn't exactly cover that kind or outrageous expense, so one of our camera operators flew his toy heli through the background on our sound stage. I think we got one or two passes before he crashed it into the set. It looked pretty real though, so I hope they use one of those takes. See if you can spot it...

Tonight's episode is all about the green. You'll see what I mean. Sorry about the rhyming...

Yoga with Mike, moving with Stephanie, and you're all in for a little surprise too. Kyle Howard's character Bobby turns out to have a couple secrets of his own.

Another little interesting inside tid bit...Adrian Wenner, one of our writers and husband to the show's creator Betsy Thomas, guest stars as Bobby's buddy. Adrian is great. He's also one of the best improv comics I ever seen.

One of the things I enjoyed about this episode was being able to hang back and riff with the boys a little more. Brendan is usually mixed up in some kind of girl trouble or something, so it was nice to get a chance to run with Gaffigan, Bunin, and Kaler and just be funny.

But not to fear, Brando's got it coming...big time.

We also got to shoot a lot of this episode outside. Most of the exterior stuff we shot on the Paramount lot in LA, but we also got to shoot some on location in Chicago right off Lake Shore Drive. Neighborhood's okay, I guess...
Read Ethics anyone? Anyone...?
Monday's episode was a fun one for Brando. It kind of marks a distinct shift in his personality, and let's just say it's not for the better. That's actually one of the best things about this season. The characters get real, faults and all. It's kind of a running theme for the season. We get to dig up a little dirt on everyone, expose some of the skeletons in their closets, and like all good friends... rip on each other for it.

We also had two guest stars in this one. Travis Schuldt from Scrubs joined us, and Johnny Galecki came back as Trouty. They were both great. Cool thing about Travis is that he just instantly fit right in. Sometimes it can be tough for an actor to show up to the set as a guest star and try to pick up the cast's rhythm, their inside jokes, their particular sense of humor. But he got it right away — we were lucky to have him.

And Johnny, what can I say? I f--king love that guy! Anyone who can pull off a character as weird as Trouty has some major talent... and balls. It ain't easy dangling yourself out there to be laughed at. Johnny's the man. He actually has this one exit line that sort of became a running joke for the rest of the season. If anyone can tell me what it is... I'll give you a nickel. Good luck! And I hope you dig this week's episode.

Till tomorrow...

Hope everybody liked Monday's episodes!

The thing that's been so great about this last round of nine episodes has hands down been the writing. So many people have mentioned that they thought the writing in the last two episodes was great. I absolutely agree. The writers this year found a whole new gear and really started to open up the characters. The dialog has gotten crisper, the jokes are funnier and at times more subtle (which I really dig), and the relationships between the characters keeps getting clearer and clearer.

The second of the two episodes that aired Monday was called "Off Day", i.e. P.J.'s bombing on the Turk Vardell Show. Funny side note: it was written by Brendan Smith who is a close friend of the show's creator (Betsy Thomas) and who also happens to be the guy my character is based on. There's something for the trivia section. It's been a running gag on the set that whenever the real Brendan and I are hanging out just talking or something, someone always walks by and calls out "Brandos!" And if you're wondering... it never seems to get old.

So now that we're back on the air I'm really looking forward to blogging with everybody. I'm kind of new to the whole blog thing so please, if you've got questions or comments I'd love to here 'em.

And now, like both Brendans would do at 5 o'clock on a Tuesday, I'm gonna go grab a beer...
Read A Promise of a New Season
So, everyone who watched the season finale of My Boys last year has been asking me, "What's gonna happen with PJ and Brendan?" Good question. In this season's premiere episode, that and many other questions will be answered. Is that enough of a tease?

Seriously though, I think everyone that saw "the kiss" is really going to dig this new episode. We get into it right away, see where Brando and Peej take things, and in true My Boys fashion... have some laughs. You're not gonna want to miss this.

Check it out Monday, July 30, at 10 pm on TBS.

And be sure to stop back in here at TVGuide.com afterwards to join in the blog.

See ya Monday!
Read The New Episodes Are Coming....
Hey, all. So, we just wrapped shooting for the season, and we had a blast! We've got some great new episodes ready to roll out this summer, very excited. I was just talking to Jim Gaffigan, Mike Bunin and Jamie Kaler, and we were all saying how much fun we had shooting the latest installments of TBS' My Boys. Maybe it was all the caffeine and booze, but I seriously don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did working with these guys. We had some great guest stars, we brought back our favorite directors, and basically just kept on doin' what we did last year, only more of it. Think you're really gonna dig the new stuff.

Hope you're all looking forward to the new episodes as much as I am.

See you Monday, July 30, at 10pm/ET!
