Why did The Wire do that to Duquan?

Why did The Wire’s scribes have to send Duquan off to the “shooting gallery” as if becoming a drug addict was the kid’s only career option? Oh, I get that it’s hard to escape the cycle of poverty and drug abuse but that’s one move the series did not have to make. I don't think I can forgive them for the parting shot of teen-aged Duquan sticking a needle in his arm.

Realistically speaking, how else could he have ended up? The odds wewre stacked so far against him that anything else would have seemed a bit contrite.

I agree with Ranger. He's homeless, he has no one to turn to, he's too young to get a job, and not secure enough to go to school on his own...what else was going to happen to him? It's sad - but it's real.

Oh, BBK and Ranger99 I beg to differ. Instead of asking his teacher for money to buy drugs, Duquan could have asked for help . He also could have gone back to Michael's rich aunt's house. Odds are, she would NOT have taken him in but she would have reported him to social services. A group home is better than no home at all. Heck, the boy could have worked the runaway teen/homeless shelter/soup kitchen circuit for a while until he was able to get into school somewhere. Anything but what they had him do. He gave up without even trying.

Rochelle - He gave up without trying???? Did you forget that he is still a CHILD??? He was getting beaten up at school and on the streets, he turned to the only person that took him in - the scrap man. I understand, trust me, we all wanted to see him reach his potential. I cried out when I saw him with the needle. What a great show to get us to care so much for these characters.

Seriously, what show have you been watching? Duquan has been deserted time and time again (his own family, middle school, Bug, now Michael). So he finds someone who needs him and latches on.

The show is all about how people end up in the situations they do. What kind of circumstances would have been more appropriate for someone to end up living on the street?

Again, it's just you.

Maybe Duquan's story will end up like Bubbles' one day. You never know. The Wire is so real, everything can change in an instant, and you know these people and their stories are still around, growing & changing the way life does, televised or not.

You're never going to find a logical reason for turning to drugs. People do it because they're surrounded by despair and don't see any way out. The fact that we can see other possibilities is irrelevant. What matters is that Duquan can't see them.
