Colecovision, Still a Classic!!

Colecovision, Still a Classic!!

I still remember my introduction to the Colecovision console. Back in 1982 a friend of mine showed me a gaming magazine with a picture of Donkey Kong in it. He told me that these were pictures of the 2600 version. I exclaimed 'Holy Moly' (not in those exact words), it looked almost arcade perfect. I couldn't wait for this to be released. He then turned the page to show me a picture of the real 2600 version and that the prior picture was for a new console called the 'Colecovision'. This image of near arcade quality graphics were the hallmark of the Colecovision system. Many classic arcade titles were released in near perfect form: Burgertime, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Frogger, Lady Bug, Venture, Mouse Trap, Frenzy, Centipede, Defender, Q*Bert, Popeye, Tutenkham and many more. I owned a 2600 at the time and wasn't able to put my hands on a Colecovision until 1999 so I had to watch enviously as kids played the great classics in the stores.

Unfortunately for Coleco the market for video games crashed 2 years later and the Colecovision was no more. A lot of great cartridges came out for it along with a 2600 adaptor allowing the Colecovision the play a large variety of games!

Today you can still find a good condition Colecovision with a lot of games via eBay or one of the other online auction houses. Pretty much any of the carts and controllers and available if one can pay the price. The Colecovision community is still active. Twin Galaxies Colecovision Score Board can be found at http://www.tgicscores.com >> where the latest high scores and challenges can be found. During the Summer/Fall of 200 a joint Atari 2600/Colecovision Decathlon was held where a lot of new high scores were posted. Thought not as active as 1984, the Colecovision still has a lot going for it. If your interested in playing a great home rendition of a classic, the Colecovision is still one of the best platforms to play on.
