TV's Fern Britton: Yes, I've had gastric band to lose weight

This Morning host Fern Britton last night admitted she has had a gastric band fitted to aid her dramatic weight loss.

The popular TV presenter, who has lost three stone and dropped four dress sizes, had the surgery two years ago. But her dramatic weight loss had been put down to a healthy diet and taking up cycling after a 250-mile charity ride.

Fern, 50, admitted she was "very pleased" with the band but urged others not to follow her example. In a statement she said: "Many people are interested in my weight loss. As interest is so high, I am making public that I had a gastric band operation two years ago.

"I did this for myself and I would not wish to influence others to do the same. For me it has worked and I am pleased with the results."

Mum-of-four Fern, married to TV chef Phil Vickery, was put under general anaesthetic for the op, which involves putting an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach.

It restricts the amount of food that can pass through the stomach, making you feel full.

Fern was photographed in a swimming costume in 2005, and said: "I'd rather be big and happy than on a diet and miserable." But she was stung by the criticism.

Last year she said she'd lost two stone and Phil said: "Fern's lost a lot of weight by cycling, walking the dog and not eating too much."

Fern recently told of her plan to cycle across Cuba, saying: "I was coming up to 50 and I thought 'I'm going to change'. In your head you've got to get to the right space. Once you're there you can do that."
