Microwaves can be generated by a variety of means, generally divided into two categories:
solid state devices
vacuum-tube based devices
Solid state microwave devices are based on semiconductors such as silicon or gallium arsenide, and include field-effect transistors (FETs), bipolar junction transistors (BJTs), Gunn diodes, and IMPATT diodes.
Specialized versions of standard transistors have been developed for higher speed, which are commonly used in microwave applications.
Microwave variations of BJTs include the heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT), and microwave variants of FETs include the MESFET, the HEMT (also known as HFET), and LDMOS transistor

An example of microwave techonology: WiMax
WiMAX is an exciting technology that promises to bring high-speed data connectivity
over wide coverage areas. There has been much focus on the access side of WiMAX
networks, with little thought devoted to backhaul needs and evolution.

The Decibel Role in Microwave Components
dB (Decibel)
The difference (or ratio) between two signal levels.
dBm (dB milliWatt)
A signal strength or power level. 0 dBm is defined as 1 mW (milliWatt) of power into a
terminating load such as an antenna or power meter.
