In the Air, In December,
With George: A Canadian Tryst
By LAWRENCE WUEST
In the air, in December, with
George
its such a delicious dance
He and the One, we out for fun
A moment of mischievous chance
In the air, in December, by
George
oh what a glorious fling
His will to lead, and we with a need
to follow his Imperial Wing
George is so beautifully bold
with a style so brave, so inviting
given to prose, his eloquence shows
his manner so decadently enticing
And now in the mist, rain and
fog
he arrives, entourage well in tow
with guardians fore and guardians more
His entrance a parade in the snow
And to the music, the slow
waltz begins
joined by the elegant breed
It's George's request, that only the best
should follow his magnificent lead
Royalty stay must be sweet
with many to shake his hand
the golden goose, with pocketbook loose
the plebes in awe as they stand
In the air, in December, with
George
It's such a tasty brew
His cup over floweth, for well doth he knoweth
our tryst but a warmup to screw
Others of notable rank
take turns at playing the squires
little do they know, enrapt in the glow
We're the ones George most desires
Yes George is our dear sweet
amour
his delicate wife notwithstanding
leave her we say, steal us away
on foreign shores we'll be landing
But George hears not what we
say
voices beckon from distant Towers
His ear is well wired, and ne'er has he tired
of hearing Word of his powers
In the air, in December, with
George
the music must finally end
at midnight we park, embrace in the dark
and fly on our way, sheep to tend
Lawrence Wuest is a Maritime Canadian who found himself,
along with many other Canadians, conveniently and inconveniently
on the streets, runways and airways of Ottawa and Halifax during
President Bush's Imperial Visit to Canada in early December,
2004. He can be reached at: wuestl@nbnet.nb.ca
Getting the Flu
in Amsterdam During a Boring Seminar
By SAUL LANDAU
White walls turn angry
I stare at windows
Voices drone smoke curls
A woman tosses liquid
Into a back yard
Beneath silent roof tops
North Sea gray pervades.
The dialogue grows acrimonious
The walls look irritated
Having born silent witness
To decades of words
Musty air I assume
Belongs to the room
Not to bilious impulses
Of serious committed scholars
Two addicts light up
My nostrils respond snaking
Clouds singe tender tonsils
Lung sacs protest intrusive
Matter cuddling against soft
Membranes while ashes stain
Already stained carpets ah
Recherché de temps perdu
Yellow leaves float anarchically
My spirit droops damp
November near the place
God once issued orders
To an avid painter
Deprived him of light
Drove him to France
To fulfill His Mission
The smoke cloisters itself
In the somber fabrics
Of preserved hanging canvasses
Anatomy classes and Delft
Remind me of death
Harmony rivers and factories
Nostalgia becomes so attractive
When body temperatures rise
An errant maple leaf
Fights its resolute path
Through chaotic wind drifts
Icy fingers grab my
Legs where's my privacy
I seek the naked
Tree branch beckoning me
Through the unwashed window
Saul Landau is the author of The Business of
America and Pre-emptive Empire.

Night And Day
By STEW ALBERT
1
Here and there
fleeting sparks flash in the night
but they don't light it up.
It's darkest now,
Bush White House has canceled dawn
announcing that terrorists plan
on using the bright light.
2
In a shadow world of bleak
possibility
a sunrise out of darkness
in burning colors of shocking celebration
commands awe
if only
in brief passing.

Reading Room. His memoir, Who
the Hell is Stew Albert?, is just out from Red Hen Press.

Kerry Gets his Mojo
Back
By DRUM
Kerry was brave in Vietnam,
an assassin for the USA
who killed small dark people in their own country,
though he came from far away. But when time came to go to bat
for the people of his own homeplace, he scampered off,
threw in the towel. Some say he threw the race.
Though he promised to fight
bravely
for the Democratic team, before the votes were counted
he was on an outbound plane He threw the blacks, he threw the
poor,
he screwed the new voters. The same day that he bowed to Bush
he flew to the west coast. He partied with Schwarzenegger
told progressives they were toast.
Was it Arnie who put him back
in touch with his Terminator roots?
Back in D.C. refreshed, recharged, he got his mojo back
bravely tackled Condi Rice, who's small, female and black.
Drum is a Portland, Oregon writer.
