Buying Out The Boss

Open-source application server and middleware maker JBoss attracted huge attention last month when it announced it was moving up the stack by building the first commercial-use product based on Enterprise Java Beans 3 (EJB3). Now JBoss is back in the news -- as a potential buyout target.

Here's the latest on the increasingly boisterous Web analytics vendor scene: WebSideStory bought Visual Sciences, a maker of streaming data analysis and visualization software. Within hours, we here at Business Intelligence Pipeline heard from Greg Drew, CEO of WebSideStory rival WebTrends, who gave his take on the matter. He is, in a word, unimpressed.

Don't believe the hype: Google didn't make any of the traditional Web analytics vendors happy when it started giving away online analytical tools. But that doesn't mean the existing vendors don't have defensible "we're-not-afraid-of-Google" rhetoric to throw at analytics-buying customers.
