Invest in yourself

WHENEVER two or more writers are gathered together, the talk always turns to money: how much Arvon is paying this year, the size of so-and-so’s advance, what grants are available. This summer’s issue is no different. There’s advice on mining the lucrative seam of copywriting and on pitching travel writing projects. We reveal the bottom line of a poet’s publishing deal and discover the puny amounts that sustain Ali Smith’s energetic imagination.

In our lead feature, Melanie Ashby suggests that investing some cash in self-publishing your book is not a last resort, but a dynamic first step on your career as a published author.

Talking of self-publishing, how would you like to invest in the Women’s Press? It’s been moribund and on the market for over two years. We think it’s time it was reinvented for a sophisticated readership that is still proud to call itself feminist. If you agree, and have some serious (or laughable) cash to invest, please call us. If Mslexia can raise £250,000, it could be ours!
