On this day
In 1264 the English barons under Simon de Montford defeated King Henry III at the battle of Lewes; in 1796 the physician Edward Jenner scratched fluid from a cowpox blister into the skin of an eight-year-old boy. On July 1 he inoculated the boy again, and no smallpox developed; in 1842 the Illustrated London News was published for the first time. The first issue reported on Queen Victoria’s first masquerade ball and sold 26,000 copies. It ceased publication in 2003; in 1878, after testing on self-inflicted wounds, Robert A Chesebrough patented Vaseline (petroleum jelly); in 1904 the opening ceremony for the first Olympic Games to be held in the US took place in St Louis, Missouri. It was held in conjunction with the World’s Fair; in 1908 Charles Furnas became the first air passenger, in an aircraft piloted by the aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright. The flight lasted for just over 28 seconds and covered 2,000ft; in 1940 Anthony Eden, the secretary of state for war, made a broadcast asking men between the ages of 17 and 65 to enrol in the new Local Defence Volunteers, better known as the Home Guard. During the Second World War, 1,206 members of this people’s army were killed on duty or died of wounds; in 1955 the Warsaw Pact was signed by the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania; in 1973 the US launched Skylab 1, its first manned space station, on a Saturn 5 rocket from Kennedy Space Center, Florida; in 1991 Winnie Mandela was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for complicity in the kidnapping and beating of four youths; in 1998 the singer and actor Frank Sinatra died, aged 82; in 2018 the US embassy officially opened in Jerusalem, after Donald Trump, the US president, recognised the city as the capital of Israel. The embassy had been in Tel Aviv since 1966.
Nature notes
Blackbird song is now pervasive in the countryside, parks and gardens. It is a deep, fluting song, with a few sharper notes terminating each casual-sounding, melodious outburst. It can go on for a long time from the same perch, a bough or a TV aerial, and sometimes the bird will continue singing in the air as it flies to a new perch. There are also many young blackbirds about, brown birds like their mothers, but a brighter rufous. They hide under bushes, making squeaking notes until their parents come and feed them. Chaffinches too are singing their breezy songs everywhere. They have a new call, a sort of splashing sound, that might be a contact call to the female on the nest.
