Welcome to Derry City Council Waste Management Section
Derry City covers an area of approximately 420 square kilometres, with
a population of 106,000 and 37,500 households, stretching south and east
from the city including parts of the Sperrin Mountains with the western
boundary consisting of the River Foyle and Donegal. The area is well served
for communications having the A2 and the A6 roads dissecting the area,
with the principle centres of population outside the city being along
these routes.
Derry City is connected to Northern Irelands rail network and Derry
port at Lisahally can handle ships up to 50,000 tonnes. The City of Derry
airport, located off the A2 between Derry and Limavady, is the North West
Regions main air terminus.
Derry City Council is responsible for waste management and recycling in
the Council area. Recent changes in both EU and national legislation have
resulted in significant change in how local authorities deal with waste.
Waste reduction, reuse and recovery form an important part of the waste
process and Derry City Council has had to respond to the changes by amending
waste collection and disposal procedures. One result of this has been
the formation of the North West Region Waste Management Group, with Derry
City Council teaming up with a number of other regional local authorities.
The members of the NWRWMG are in alphabetical order :
Ballymoney Borough Council
Colraine Borough Council
Derry City Council
Limavady Borough Council
Magherafelt District Council
Moyle District Council
Strabane District Council
The Council’s have formed this grouping expressly for strategic
waste planning purposes.
