Derry City Council in conjunction with its partners would like to invite you to be part of a packed programme of activities and events which is taking place to celebrate Community Relations Week 2008.

The events have been organised inconjnction with community groups, The Shared City Project and Derry City Council Community Relations Officers. . ‘Are We There Yet?’ is the campaign for Community Relations Week in the Derry City Council area. "We have come so far for peace but ‘Are We There Yet?’ is the question and challenge being posed to communities, the public and politicians. Everyone is encouraged to attend at least one event that week to show their support for these initiatives.

Community Relations Week is an annual week co-ordinated by the NI Community Relations Council. A full programme of events across Northern Ireland is available on www.nicrc.org.uk

Monday 21st April

Community Relations Week and ‘Are we there yet?’
Campaign launch for the city and ‘ Love Poetry Hate Racism’ workshops.

A launch of the ‘Are we there yet?’ campaign for Community Relations Week in the local council area in partnership with a wide range of local Community Relations and Ethnic Minority Community organisations. A packed interactive launch with music, poetry and much more! All welcome.

Friday 25th and Saturday 26th April

‘ Are we there yet?’ Campaign

We have come so far with peace and better community relations, but ‘Are we there yet?’ The campaign moves to Foyleside for two days to give the public a chance to make a postcard pledge or postcard challenge to politicians, to work towards a better and shared future for everyone. Come and fill in a postcard and join the campaign fun!

The flower festival will depict the positive impact of Community Relations areas across the city both urban and rural. The story will be told through the innovative display of beautiful blooms.

The ‘Youth United Service’ will celebrate 35 years of the Cathedral Youth Club providing service to young people living in an interface area and celebrate good community relations initiatives between young people of our city.

In this local secondary schools’ event (hosted by David Dunseath) a panel of five politicians will be in the hot seat answering challenging questions posed by young people.

Launch of ‘DiverseCity’ Ethnic Minorities Exhibition
Derry City Council CR (& Foyle Multi-cultural Forum & Walled City Neighbourhood Initiative)

The exhibition (on public display all CR week) explores the cultures and traditions of ethnic minority groups living in the city. It also aims to provide food for thought around challenging stereotypical perceptions about local ethnic minority communities, migrant workers and racism.

Tuesday 29th April

Conflict Resolution & Mediation Skills Workshop

This workshop examine the dynamics of conflict, conflict escalation, ways of transforming conflict and the role of a third party interventionalist in transforming conflict. Faciliatated by Mr. Michael Doherty, who is recognised at one of the leading trainers & facilitators in this work.

‘ Community Relations Through the Lens’ is an exhibition of digital photographs highlighting the work of amateur photographers from the Shared City Project Community Education Programme.

‘Re-imaging Communities’ – Launch of Funding Success Stories

Council and community partnership efforts have secured substantial ‘Re-imaging Communities’ Arts Council NI funding for local projects. This event highlights the success stories funded to date, showcases how communities will use art to make local areas more inclusive and explains the funding for any further interested communities.

From the Far East to the Far West’ – 40 years history of the NW Chinese Community

The Chinese Community in the North West dates back to the 1960’s. This initiative launches a booklet and panel on permanent display in the Tower Museum to represent the Chinese Community’s perspective on 40 years of life here – including cultures, traditions, the ‘troubles’, reasons for living here, languages and local reactions. All welcome.

The ‘Are we there yet?’ campaign will hand over the postcard pledges and challenges from the public, community groups and schools to politicians from across all the political parties. As a culmination of CR week the public and all CR week event organisers are invited to the final campaign celebration.

Live sketches will be run in public spaces over two days that provoke community relations issues in the city such as the wearing of sports tops, school uniforms and neutrality of space.

International Community Fun Day and ‘It’s a knockout’ competition. (subject to funding)

This public event brings together 12 local teams from culturally diverse ethnic communities for friendly competition and a family fun day. In the ethos of ‘Communities that play together stay together’ this is an opportunity for the public to come along and celebrate cultural diversity together. All welcome.

Derry City Council is delighted to support Community Relations Week which is in line with the Executive’s Programme for Government 2008-2011 and its aim to ‘implement a programme of cohesion and integration for a shared and better future.’
