Jewel of the Nile (1985)
ITV1, 3pm
Reprising their roles from Romancing the Stone a year before, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner co-star in this routine action comedy. Now living the quiet life, the pair are plunged into exotic peril once more when Turner is kidnapped by Beduin tribesmen. Danny DeVito also returns for this inferior but mostly amusing sequel. (106min)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
BBC One, 8.05pm
Being shown to coincide with the release of the new Indiana Jones film, this second chapter is generally considered the weakest of the original trilogy. Harrison Ford's rugged tomb raider and Kate Capshaw's sassy cabaret singer search for a magical stolen stone in India. The action barrels along, but the graphic violence and stereotypical dark-skinned villains attracted criticism at the time. (118min)
Sophie's Choice (1982)
TCM, 9pm
This harrowing but painfully slow adaptation of William Styron's novel was the Schindler's List of its day. Meryl Streep literally begged the director Alan J.Pakula for the role of a Polish Holocaust survivor scarred for ever by the cruelty of her Nazi captors. Kevin Kline and Peter MacNicol co-star, but Sophie's Choice belongs to Streep's powerful, Oscar-winning performance. (150min)
Hero (2002)
Channel 4, 9.05pm
Made in the wake of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the director Zhang Yimou's visually dazzling historical adventure stars the martial arts icon Jet Li as a warrior swordsman trying to reunite his divided nation. Told in three parallel chapters, each with its own colour code, Hero looks stunning even if the plot lacks weight. The cast includes numerous Chinese superstars, including Zhang Ziyi and Maggie Cheung. (99min)
Legally Blonde (2001)
Five, 9.05pm
Reese Witherspoon models a succession of fantastically lurid outfits and no less than 40 different hairstyles in this deliriously silly campus comedy. Determined to prove that she has brains as well as looks, Witherspoon's Beverly Hills party girl flukes her way into Harvard Law School before assisting on a high-profile court case. (96min)
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
ITV2, 10.05pm
A clever, affectionate spoof of trashy horror films, Shaun of the Dead marked the successful big-screen debut of the team behind the cult TV sitcom Spaced. Simon Pegg plays an affable slacker fighting back against a full-scale zombie invasion. Pegg and the director Edgar Wright moved on to parody buddy cop movies with last year's Hot Fuzz. (99min)
