Subject: National Honors Society

Well first off, I just recieved letter that said I didn't make it in. But there are some things about it that really bother me.

For starters, I'm not really sure why I didn't get in (3.93 GPA plus more or as much as community service as other applicants). Also I have nothing against me on my permanent record.

Now to the actual NHS. Why is it that you must apply to a group that just gives you better means of acquiring community service? I can see why they would want you to put down your volunteer hours and maybe some leadership work, but to make you write an essay, I don't feel that it potrays one's character at all.

Anybody else think it is stupid or have an idea why I didn't get in?

The Flood's Resident 4Chan Officer.

You don't do enough volunteer work and you don't contribute to society enough.

That's the other part of NHS. You also must be recommended by X amount of teachers.

NHS is all politics man. Don't worry about that, just keep that awesome GPA up!

Well they recommended 15 hours per year and I averaged about 25 hours a year. Also, I have never had a teacher that said I wasn't a great student (even ones that I hated).

And the Warriors who live forever... fight on to the end.

I was invited to join NHS. But they wanted me to write a paper saying why I should be a part of their group.

I said to hell with them.

I thought the same thing, but I do want to get into a good college. I can use any boost I can get.

Dude im equiped like a small rodent, what would you do?

NHS is the most hilarious thing ever. For some odd reason the retarded colleges like seeing this pointless club on your application when the people in it do NOTHING but sit around and jack off for and hour each week

Glycerine

Its not worth it to worry. NHS means nothing. With youre GPA you'll be fine.

Hell, my GPA is 4.0 weighted and unweighted, and I didnt get in. So i stopped applying.

And now i'm an accepted student to Pratt Institute's school of Architecture.

-blam!- NHS. You dont need them.

Surrender? I've never heard of such. Defeat? Not a possibility! Why...why I will fight and fight and fight, until I am victorious, or I am dead? Because that is who I am, and that is why I fight; everyone will see that, when I am proclaimed greatest among men.

I just turned the offers down, and I still got accepted into college just fine.

I was a member of that as a lad, I did around 90 hours of community service a year and had a 3.97 GPA.
Yeah, I spent an awful lot of time in nursing homes and volunteering for immigrant naturalization places.

I didn't apply. They invite you.

I gots invited :D

It's retarded though, to me at least. The meetings waste my lunch period. But, I do have a few friends, so it isn't that bad. Maybe I'll convince them to buy different pizza for the meetings too. Total crap pizza.

It's pretty simple: you have a point system. Get all the points, you get in.

Community service and GPA are only part of it. You need extracurricular activities and teacher recommendation.

You obviously weren't involved with your school enough....oh well. It's not that big of a deal anyways, just looks good on college applications.

  • 04.30.2008 3:13 PM PDT

If they invited me and then told me to write an essay as to why I wanted in I would put nothing but:

"I didn't want in, you invited me."

Although, I'd probably lengthen it into one paragraph.

  • 04.30.2008 3:17 PM PDT

its a joke, dont worry about it. I was in it for two years in high school and it didnt do one thing for me. Didnt help when i applied for colleges, didnt help getting scholarships, its just a way of gently bringing out the top students from the lower ones.

its just a waste of your time, you put in all these community service hours for what? nothing. trust me dude dont even worry about it. If your a good student and you get good grades then trust me colleges will look your way.

  • 04.30.2008 3:19 PM PDT

I was in it. All the "popular" kids ran it and it blew chicken balls. I hated it. Didn't help me at all. The only thing I gained was a sore stomach when the meetings ran during lunch hours...

I still got turned down from University of Michigan...

I am actually looking at the same university, thankfully my dad attended U of M Flint, so that might help me out a bit.

You're as good as in than....No one in my family went there, so I was screwed.

I had a 3.6 GPA, 30 ACT score, NHS, Marching Band 3 years (in a band that ranked in the top 10 nation-wide) and I am hard of hearing...

If that doesn't do it, than what the hell does?

I sure hope so, but without some massive scholarships, I won't be able to afford it.

NHS is bullcrap.
Take me for instance.

No volunteer service.
3.75 (unweighted) GPA.
No extracurricular activities.
Zero school spirit.

Yet I was in NHS as a Sophomore-Senior.
(They didn't let freshmen in.)

  • 04.30.2008 3:32 PM PDT

NHS sucks. The only reason anyone signs up is to pad their college resume. The only "honor" I have attained is attending around half or so of the mind numbing meetings, not paying my fee, and doing zero hours of community service. Fun times.

That's me too. I was going for NJHS, but my mom said I wouldn't get in anyway. So, I didn't even try to get in.

ALL WINGS PULL UP!!! PULL UP!!!! *crashes in the wall of text and explodes*

My high school requires an application, essay, background, and rep sheet (if you have one). Then once you're in, you MUST have 40 hours of community service per year to get .25 credits. So, over the 4 years you're there, you will have 160 hours to your record and you will have been able to get all 26 credits to graduate.
Personally, I love the idea.
