I've been compiling this list for some time and in an attempt to learn more about sociological, environmental, political, and nautical history. I've also listed some great books on the two world wars. There's nothing here that is too literary, intellectual or dense (in writing that is). This list is pure FUN and it has something for everyone.

If you want to learn more about world events current Naked in Baghdad: The Iraq War as Seen by NPR's Correspondent Anne Garrels and past Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History , compelling stories about real life heroes Seabiscuit: An American Legend and otherwise everyday folks Nicholas and Alexandra, read on.

For natural disaster enthusiasts don't miss:

Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938
The Ship and the Storm: Hurricane Mitch and the Loss of the Fantome
The Perfect Storm : A True Story of Men Against the Sea
The Last Run: A true story of rescue and redemption on the Alaska seas

My life was personally affected by Hurricane Katrina when I went to the Gulf Coast 11 times to help rescue the animals left behind. This was the most catastrophic animal disaster in the history of the United States. Read more:

Here are two excellent non-fiction books if you're looking for historical tales of the US. One is a great story about Chicago in the pre-war years and the other a truly heroic tale of the dogs and men who saved a small town from decimation by disease:

The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America
The Cruelest Miles: The Heroic Story of Dogs and Men in a Race Against an Epidemic

The following books were required reading in my graduate studies. They include topics on oil economics and current conflicts, particularly studies in international terrorism and those conflicts defined as such. If you want to become more knowledgeable in international politics and history read the following:

The New Great Game: Blood and Oil in Central Asia
Chechnya: To the Heart of a Conflict
Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill
From Beirut to Jerusalem
The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order
The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization

And if you don't think oil had anything to do with the US invasion of Iraq:

Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict With a New Introduction by the Author
The Prize : The Epic Quest for Oil, Money & Power

Oh, and one more thing...for a great example of how the US conducts its foreign affairs don't miss:
