Quote No. 1156
Two centuries ago, when a great man appeared, people looked for God's purpose in him; today we look for his press agent.
- Daniel Boorstin
In 1961, the American author, historian, and future U.S. Librarian of Congress wrote a groundbreaking book on social theory entitled The Image, which would influence the concepts of hyperreality and postmodernism.
The Image explored the growing influence of media in America, and in it, Boorstin coined the term "pseudo-event" which described an event where nothing of any merit actually occurs, an event that would not otherwise take place were it not for the presence of the media, such as a press conference. |
