Ban 9 to 5 on All Clocks to Promote Entrepreneurship?

In an attempt to spark the economy through entrepreneurship and quell people's fears of unemployment, PerfectBusiness.com -- a networking and resource Web site for entrepreneurs based in Los Angeles -- is proposing an ordinance that will replace the numbers 9 and 5 with exclamation points.

"The proposed change will constantly remind us there is more to life than working nine to five," says Patrick Gillespie, head of business development.

When asked his thoughts on the proposal, PerfectBusiness' editor-in-chief, Scott Plesha, simply responded, "Why not?"

Why not indeed. The notion of doing away with the 9 and 5 may just be the inspiration people need to start their own businesses.

Tongue and cheek? The PerfectBusiness team doesn't think so. Gillespie elaborated, "If the petition succeeds, many of us will be starting our workdays at !:00. Now that's a change worth considering."

What do you think about this proposed "ordinance?" Frankly I've never met anyone who worked nine to five, but it's a proposal that may have some legs. If anything, it's kind of a fun idea.

That's a step in the right direction! I only have a handful of friends that actually work a 9-5 job. Most of them still stay late and end up having to work on the weekends, especially towards month end. I think companies do much better when they don't put tight restraints on their employee's time clock. Everyone has different things going on in their lives and to get all of us to meet on a 9-5 basis is ridiculous. It worked 30 years ago when life was simpler but just doesn't work today. For a single working parent, the ability to go to work 30 minutes after taking the kids to school can tremendously help their schedule and their productivity as well because they will not be so stressed. I used to have a boss when my children were little that would literally stand at the door tapping his watch if I was a minute late. I was a single parent of three and believe me, it was not easy to get there only a minute or two late! I say more power to them! I haven't worked 9-5 in years and my productivity is great when I run my schedule! It is a fun idea and will be interesting to see what happens. (Oh, and by the way, I hated that boss and eventually quit that job. Best move I ever made!) ...
