The Sims Unleashed is the fifth expansion pack to the series, and we can only guess that bug-testing such a product -- with so many items and interactions -- must be a nightmare. While we didn't find any showstopper bugs, there are some definite problems that are starting to infest the game as surely as a raccoon tips over a garbage can. For example, even on high-end systems the load time is straining bearability. With more than two or three expansions installed, you can be looking at a two-minute startup time, or more! Yowch.

Random neighborhood pets will sometimes wander into your yard, which is great. They might even have "accidents" on your property, which is funny. The problem is with clockwork regularity in which they piddle in the very corners of your lot. In the time-compressed world of the Sims, walking over to the corner of your yard, cleaning up the mess, and walking back can basically kill a whole evening. It quickly gets frustrating; wouldn't playtesting have shown that? Also, neighborhood pets won't move out of the way of traffic. They don't get run over, but the cars won't go around them. One time my Sim was stuck for six simulated hours in his driveway because a puppy wouldn't step aside and let his bus through. Frustrating!

I waited for SIX HOURS for that puppy to move.
Some Sim pathing problems haven't been fixed, and often the Sims will still "spin in place" for a little before sitting down or interacting with an object. In one instance, my Sims stopped using a perfectly good couch, one they had used the day before ... another strange bug rearing its head.

Here, Kitty Kitty

But like the frustrations of owning a real pet, these nuisances aren't enough to take away from the core game, which remains very fun. The addition of bigger neighborhoods and pets to interact with makes a huge impact on your game world.

Of all the expansions, Hot Date and Unleashed give you the most bang for the buck. In either case, they add a great deal of interactions to the core game while also expanding your playground with bigger neighborhoods or downtowns to explore. If having your Sims kick around plastic pink lawn flamingos is beginning to lose its luster, and the $30 price tag doesn't discourage you, The Sims Unleashed is a great way to breathe new life into a classic game.
