Crysis is a next-generation PC first-person shooter from Crytek, the award-winning developers of "Far Cry." It is 2020, and global tensions have reached boiling point as the U.S. and North Korea square off in the South China Sea. At stake: a mysterious artifact uncovered by a team of U.S. archeologists. The North Korean government quickly seizes the area, prompting the U.S. to dispatch an elite team of Delta Force operatives on a rescue mission. During the siege the true nature of the artifact quickly emerges, pointing to the existence of an alien presence on Earth, and ultimately the trigger for a massive-scale alien invasion. The battle to save Earth begins as the aliens' flash freeze the tropics into a ghostly-white frozen landscape. As gamers take up arms against the aliens, they will be outfitted with customizable weapons and a high tech Nanosuit, allowing them to adapt their tactics and abilities to a hostile, ever-changing environment and a mysterious enemy. When you get past the stealth-themed missions early on, and move onto missions with full use of tanks, helicopters, rockets, and airstrikes, the tactical gameplay plus the production values turn Crysis into a love letter for military combat.

Having a big bag of tricks and the complete freedom to approach each encounter from so many different strategic angles is a great thing. Each individual area of the game is overwhelmingly impressive, but when considering what Crytek has accomplished with the game as a whole package it's hard not to be blown away.

This is some fast, well designed gameplay with enough options to allow players to use their own style of attack with satisfying suit abilities and weapons. Crytek has upped their attention to detail in presentation and dropped the worst parts of "Far Cry’s" story.

There was a time in PC gaming when A-list titles regularly pushed the limits of what computers were capable of. This might've been a necessity, but it forced developers to deliver new experiences. Crysis harkens back to that mindset, reminding me of why I became addicted to PC gaming in the first place.

Crysis turns out to be a pretty perfect woman. It's beautiful, clever, fun loving, doesn't mind what you get up to and does its very best to keep you happy (it even has the option to turn the volume down). In fact if I wasn't already spoken for I may be getting ready to introduce it to my parents.

A game that feels supremely engineered, like a precision machine, or a German automobile. It's makes "Half-Life 2" seem old and frail, but by the same token it does nothing to diminish the imaginative achievements of that series. Crysis is impressive, but not imaginatively bold. Nor does it engage us like some other great shooters - such as "BioShock" - have done with their world and their personality. It's far better than "Far Cry."

Looks and sounds great and the free-form gameplay with the nanosuit never gets old. Unfortunately the choices player can make lessen more and more towards the end of the game, where you are just forced to shoot things out. The end of the game is simply stupid, everything stops just when the final chapter is supposed to start. It feels like the developers ran out of time and had to ship the game before the levels could be finalized. [Dec 2007]

Crysis has a lot going for it, even though you'll need a pretty powerful computer to get the full experience. It does have its shortcomings though, and among other things I think that it may prove to be pretty frustrating for casual gamers and that a fair number of gamers won't be too pleased with the endgame.

Crysis was our most anticipated PC game of 2007 and the final product does keep some of its promise in terms of its graphics and its multiplayer mode. It’s a startling change that the game emphasizes by having the aliens cover the island with snow. It feels as though Crytek created two games and jammed them together, and while the last third is still pretty fun, it feels like a pale imitation of "Halo 3."

Crytek has clearly stuck close to the Far Cry formula with Crysis, which is no bad thing. Improvements in graphics and evolved gameplay, as well as brilliant new features such as the nanosuit, make this a thoroughly suitable spiritual successor to Crytek's first game. We'd be lying if we said that the campaign's final act wasn't bitterly disappointing though.

Fran M. gave it a10:
Pushing aside the somewhat unintelligent story-line.. We have to look at this games amazing features. Dont give it crappy ratings just cause the designers wanted to make a be-a-utiful game! Thats half of what making a game is about! Another thing, not to long ago (5 years or so) there was hardly any game that had replay value beyond harder difficulty settings. Like Unreal Tournament, plus the fact that the physics engine is supreme beyond anything I've seen. I'de say no one can even think about giving this game any less then a 8 because it was very well planned out. And if you disagree because of bugs, crashes, or high end graphics, then you gotta give Cry-tek a break because they were dealing with a new engine ENTIRELY and that my friends is extremely hard. For starting from scratch and making a game that I can find fun in for every 30 secs that passes, I give it a 10 all the way. Sequal better be fixed up though!

Jack O. gave it a5:
A well-hyped disappointment. Take FarCry, copy, dilute with equal measures of plagiarised art material from The Matrix and Alien, fail to playtest, resulting in frustrating combat, buggy physics and AI that frequently just run into walls, add a fairly nice system of suit and weapon modifications and some beautifully designed island and military environments. Cook for around six hours, then leave to marinade in a bucket of derivative, boring and cliched sci-fi action that would shame the 1980s. Add some fairly pretty graphics to taste, wasted on a visually and artistically uninspiring game, bad animation, dialogue seemingly written by a 13 year old US Marine with attention deficit disorder, and serve. Crysis. A flawed, wasted opportunity, thriving on it's own marketing and the cash of the easily impressed masses. Critically, this game should be a flop, which shows just how much clout Electronic Arts have with the gaming media, once again.

James B. gave it a10:
Crysis is a great looking game with fantastic visuals, realistic physics, and excellent free form gameplay. The Cryengine 2 sandbox is also fun to mess around with and easy to use.

Simon M. gave it a3:
Shoot 1,000 N Koreans and then 500 aliens (in the later levels) to save the planet. God this is so awful a story that the graphics can't save it. Yawn your way through the obvious paper thin plot and generic linear levels. Will somebody in the gaming industry produce a game with real atmosphere and immersion and make the industry grow up? Doom was over a decade ago. Where is the real improvement over this other than graphics?

Chris H. gave it a6:
Sure the graphics are amazing. even in Low spec its not bad. but after testing it. it made me realize how many things that were very critical were left in the game. like having the end bug out and having the TAC not lock on STILL! story line is quite boring. Multiplayer wise love it. but wish they kept the gore level in that we saw in Alpha. IE corpse chunks from MOAR

Tom V. gave it an8:
Beautiful and impressive. The first half of the game is amazing to play through! The sheer freedom you get when attempting missions early on is great, and you feel badass taking on what seems like an entire army. The game REALLY dropped after the Alien Ship (though the atmosphere inside was incredible, and the little skirmishes with smaller aliens outside were enjoyable) - it became stale, it got very linear, and the aliens just weren't impressive anymore. On top of that, I didn't see any need for any suit abilities besides armor at that point - there's no running from the flying aliens, you certainly can't punch them, and you're defending objectives most of the time, so cloaking doesn't help. That section aside, the Sandbox editor should keep me very happy for a while.

Jesus C. gave it a3:
The graphics are pretty but the gameplay is monotonous and predictable. The thing that really ruined it for me was how the baddies always know where you are, no matter if you are stealthed. They don't shoot at you when you have stealth on but they will follow you around and the moment the stealth comes off they open fire. This is really a game ruiner considering how weak they make your body and how is it is to get killed. Also, notice how every gaming site has been giving this game glowing reviews yet the user reviews are abysmal. The makers of this game is spending a lot of money on advertising at our favorite gaming review sites and has bought them all off. Same thing as with that crappy Kane game.
