Indiana Jones Sketch Cards from Joe Corroney
March 18, 2008

Add an original piece of Indiana Jones art to your collection with the latest of Artist Sketch cards in the Indiana Jones Heritage Trading Card Set from Topps -- in stores now.

As one of the artists involved in the exciting new series of Topps cards that celebrate the Indiana Jones films, Joe Corroney remembers how much the Indiana Jones movies influenced his childhood.

"When I was a kid there was only one other movie trilogy I loved as much as Star Wars and that was Indiana Jones," Corroney says. "I have fond memories of seeing the Indy films in the theater with my parents. When Raiders of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom were released my parents enjoyed them with me so much we saw each film twice on their opening weekends. I even remember sitting through the end credits with my dad for The Last Crusade watching as Indy and his father ride off into the sunset. My dad, not being the most patient person in the world, never usually sat through the credits for any movie so that was a really fond memory too."

"Every day before I headed off to school in the morning I would pop in one of my copies of Star Wars or the Indiana Jones films on VHS while I usually chowed down on my favorite cereal," Corroney continues. "The next morning I'd just pick up from where I left off and I did this routine for years. I've really been studying these movies for a long time and I've been an Indy fan my whole life. Finally, getting to contribute artwork to an Indiana Jones project after all of these years really is a dream come true for me."

As with the Star Wars saga, Corroney believes Indiana Jones fans love the films for its complex heroes. "People relate to Indiana Jones so well because as a heroic character he's full of flaws and doesn't always beat the bad guys with some kind of superior strength, firepower or crazy martial arts like most modern action heroes," Corroney says. "The character is that much more identifiable and realistic and makes the cliffhangers and pitfalls he encounters even more exciting for the audiences sharing his adventures."

Out of all the characters to draw for the set, Indiana Jones remains Corroney's favorite. "I especially liked drawing him from Raiders of the Lost Ark because he was at his most mysterious and enigmatic which is appealing to me as a movie buff for heroic characters," Corroney explains. "Harrison Ford seemed to balance the bravery and heroism really well with an edgy sense of danger and darkness for the character not unlike Humphrey Bogart in The Treasure of Sierra Madre and Casablanca or other old noir films which featured shady adventurers with a conscience and a checkered past. Those kinds of characters are always fun for me to work with."

With the hundreds of cards Corroney sketched, he says he tried to represent all three original Indiana Jones films with an appropriate balance of portraits from each one. "As an aside, I illustrated one sketch card of the golden fertility idol from Raiders of the Lost Ark since I figured it would be fun for collectors to hunt down," Corroney reveals. "Drawing the idol on a card seemed to be somehow appropriate as a hand-held, smaller collectible 'treasure.' I thought about drawing one of the other smaller treasures like the Staff of Ra headpiece, a Sankara stone or The Holy Grail but I chose the idol instead since it was more visually dynamic than the others and because it's the first treasure we ever see Indy go after."
