Top Ten Half-Life Mods You Aren't Playing
There's more to life than Counter-Strike.
By Kevin Bowen | April 20, 2003

Half-Life is still the most played first-person shooter online, thanks to great modifications like Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, and Natural Selection. But there’s a whole bunch of other finished, fun mods out there that you may not be aware of. Sure, they may not be as polished as some of the bigger mods or have as many servers to play on, but hey, they’re different ... and free!

Here’s a list of ten random, downloadable, and somewhat obscure Half-Life mods you may want to try.

10. Front Line Force

FLF tends to get a little messy at times.
Front Line Force is a class-based, non-realistic-realistic, attack/defend-style teamplay mod. Confused? See, Front Line Force uses realistic weapons, but the gameplay is pretty much totally unrealistic and really fast-paced compared to most other HL mods. If you’re accustomed to playing slower, more tactical-minded mods, you might find FLF to be a nice changeup.

FLF has been around for awhile and had time to develop some really nice maps and features. For example, if you and your teammates stick closely together, you’ll get accuracy bonuses and your health will slowly regenerate. It’s a good way to encourage teamplay. All in all, this is a really solid mod that deserves more recognition!

    9. The Specialists

    Woo who?
The Specialists is a mod that came out of pretty much nowhere a couple months ago but has still managed to gather up a small community of dedicated fans. This is one of those "stylish combat" mods in the vein of something like Action Half-Life. Akimbo weapons and other Hong Kong-style action movie influences abound.

The Specialists has a stunt system where you can pull of dives, double jumps, slides, and air wheels. As a nice touch, there’s an encumbrance system. So, if you’re dragging around a ton of weapons, you won’t be able to dive as far, for example. Nifty!

    8. Global Warfare

Global Warfare has a few unusual gameplay modes, like Airstrike.
Global Warfare is a carefully balanced teamplay mod that pits terrorists against United Nations forces.

The basic concept makes it seem fairly easy to dismiss Global Warfare as yet another Counter-Strike rip-off, but Global Warfare offers up some unique ideas and throws in a whole bunch of Team Fortress-like influences. There’s not enough room to explain all of GW’s intricacies here, but despite the abundance of features, it remains incredibly newbie friendly and easy to pick up.
