The Way Things Are

Catching Up

I don’t think I can properly convey how guilty I feel for not keeping this updated, so I’ll just go ahead and skip the apologizing. I suck and I know it. Here’s a brief update on what’s going on.

- Game Developers Conference was this week and was fabulous as usual. I met a ton of awesome people, managed to party hard and played more Street Fighter IV than anyone who doesn’t actually work at Capcom. This will be leading into five days worth of Street Fighter IV coverage that should begin tomorrow at GameTap.

- What happened to No Country for Old Arcades? The Arcade Infinity article keeps getting delayed both by the gods of scheduling and by my own hand. If it’s not up by next week, I’ll hang myself.

- Dude, I think that’s it.

To be honest, the personal life has been getting more attention than the professional life, but I think the balance is back. Weirdness, my friends. Weirdness.

Lost Odyssey packaging is fantastic!

side_lostodyssey_package.jpgYou may have heard that the packaging for Microsoft’s latest JRPG adventure, Lost Odyssey, is lacking in quality. Well, I’m here to tell you that’s not true. You see, the tri-spindled discs and enveloped fourth is what you find in the regular edition of the game. You’re a hardcore gamer, are you not? Why settle for the ordinary when you could have the extraordinary!

Our special edition of Lost Odyssey has arrived and I’d like to take you on a special tour of what you’ll find inside.

Video Tour of Arcade Infinity

Not to totally spoil the third entry in the No Country for Old Arcades series, but I couldn’t wait to show you folks this video tour that I put together with some of my good friends from Southern California. I didn’t get to spend quite as much time as I would have liked at Arcade Infinity, but then again I probably say that every time I head down there.

Minh was in rare form that night, so enjoy!

February 8-9: Arcade Infinity, CA

My first major trip in the “No Country for Old Arcades” series (I should really create my own hub page for that) is this weekend and I’ll be heading to my favorite place in the world, Arcade Infinity in Rowland Heights, California. In the early 2000’s, AI was the mecca of Bemani music gaming for the United States. Folks would travel from all around the country to play there and myself, more times than I can count.

My addiction to massive road trips and Arcade Infinity became so bad that one point, people thought I lived in the area. That’s what happens when you somehow con folks into wanting to go to AI every weekend.

I’ll be flying down, grabbing a rental and hanging out at Arcade Infinity this Friday (after 8PM) and Saturday night (after 6PM), playing Pop’n Music and generally soaking it all back in. If you’d like to hang out and drop a few lines for the feature, let me know via email, or just come harass me on the spot. We’ll go to Tommy’s and get awesome chili burgers and have bad fast food nightmares.

Life Complete, Oneechanbara: The Movie

Sweet zombie Jesus, yes! Everyone’s favorite bikini-girls-zombie-slasher is heading to theatres! Between this and The Machine Girl, 2008 is already the greatest year in modern movie history. That is of course, if you really enjoy half-naked cheesecake models dishing out ridiculous amounts of violence. For those who aren’t totally aware of what I’m talking check out the trailer for The Machine Girl.

I Am the Space Baby

Here’s something that I should have mentioned last week. Head honcho of Q Entertainment and overall awesome guy, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, was in town for the last push of Rez HD and came by the GameTap offices for an interview. There were about four of us in there to do it so while everyone else had the serious questions down, I pinged him with questions that I can only deem as once in a lifetime. We ended up talking quite a bit about his scarcely documented work on the arcade racer Manx TT and at one point I accidentally managed to call him overweight.

I’m the master of dealing with cute, fobby people. Ask me to place your order at Jollibee next time.

I’ve been spending a lot of time with Rez HD recently and it’s definitely a title that has stood the test of time, but most likely because there’s still nothing quite like it. And thank god for that. I don’t think I’d want to live in a world where there were annual sequels of Rez like we got with Katamari Damacy. I’ve been shooting for the achievements, though I’m noticing that it takes me longer and longer each time through the Direct Assault mode. I keep losing interest half way and wind up picking it back up again six hours later.

I’m not sure if I’d jump off the deep end and call it a ten, but I will consider you a bad person if you own an Xbox 360 and don’t pick up Rez. Chances are you never played it and if you did, it was probably the crappy Dreamcast version anyway. Go now!
