Koodoo Fisheries Complex (KFC)   Infrastructure

Koodoo Fisheries ComplexKFC in the south of the country started its operations in 1996. KFC has the capacity to freeze 450 mt in 24 hours and has a 2,000 cold storage. This facility together with an alongside berth which can accommodate vessels up to 2500 DWT has contributed  to the development of fishery in the region and accounts for the lions’ share of increases in the export of frozen fish fishery products.

Mifco is installed the capacity to produce 80 Mt ice plant to offer ice to fishermen, such that landings could be received in better condition. Mifco is also looking to increase the cold storage capacity of the plant such that the capacity of the plant is more appropriate to the landing patterns of the region.

While KFC started basically as a fish purchasing and exporting location, Mifco has already undertaken value-addition at KFC by investing in a Katusobushi plant at KFC. The products of this plant, processed under Japanese technical and quality supervision has already gained market share in Japan. And Mifco has, in 2003 completed a second phase enlargement of the project.

History of KFC

Fishing has always been an all-year around activity, the catch been richer in the south of the country compared to the north. Before the operation of KFC was started, the daily fish landings from the fishermen of the south were received by the collector vessels that were stationed around the southern region of the country.

However, due to increase in catch from the four huge fishing islands in the south, it had become necessary to establish a land-based collection centre, in order to sustain and support the livelihood of the fishermen.

The island of Kooddoo, formerly known as Kubuddoo in the early 1800, was chosen to its close proximity to the above mentioned fishing islands (Vilingilli, Maamendhoo, Dhaandhoo and to the north of the atoll Thinadhoo ).

The operation at Kooddoo has enabled Mifco to operate and move the many fish collector vessels and freezing boats with ease within and out of the country respectively.
