Addu Plant    

Mifco has decided to invest in a fresh fish plant and a Katsuobushi plant in Addu to coincide with plans to upgrade the airport at Gan island in Addu as an international airport and the development of a regional harbour at Hithadhoo island.

Addu fresh fish plant will be located in Hithadhoo, Addu Atoll.
The plant will comprise of a fresh yellow fin processing plant capable of processing 15 tons of fresh yellow fin tuna per day as fresh tuna loins, a Katsuobishi production plant capable of processing 20 tons of skip jack tuna per day for Katsuobushi, 100 ton cold storage space and 10 tons blast freezing per day for tuna and skipjack and a 50 ton per day sea water block Ice plant. The Katsuobushi plant would allow processing of Skipjack in dried form for export.

Location of plants
Public road running through the site. This road has now been moved outside the site. Beach front of the site where alongside berth is expected to be built.

Main support facilities will include 210 meter berthing facilities for fishing vessels and collector vessels, a desalination plant, a fish meal plant to utilize the fish waste of the whole plant, water storage and distribution system and warehousing facilities for raw materials and finished products. The plant also will incorporate a laboratory for testing the quality of fresh and frozen tuna for consumer markets in the EU zone.

Construction work of the plant is expected to start by the end of June 2004 and is expected to be complete by June 2005.

This plant will provide job opportunities for more than 140 people once it is in full operation.
