The Pack's"In My Car" recalls the early days of rap video, with i's green screen special effects, simplistic rhymes and  infectious hook. But this isn’t a retro outing, as the clip employs slick animation to create a surreal scenes with cascading dollars and a floating spaceman. While the song lacks the compelling narrative of an old school rap hit, it compensates for that with repetition, polished production and repetition. If the hook isn’t stuck in your head by the end of this one, you might want change the batteries in your hearing aid or see if you've suffered a brain injury. Since going on sale exclusively at the iTunes Music Store last store — the only place so far where you could watch it — the Britney Spears magnum opus "Gimme More" has shot to #1, the same sales rankings that has befallen the single itself. Her presence on a magazine cover or a mere mention on a Web site guarantees an avalanche of rubberneckers — see this NY Times article about Ms. Spears as Old Faithful — thereby ensuring coverage of her every move regardless of how worthy they are of any attention at all. Although the actual content of this video is totally irrelevant, here's the quick synopsis. Good Girl Blonde Britney shows up at a strip club with her gal pals to watch her Bad Girl Brunette doppelganger wriggle around a pole and lip-sync the vocals. I don't have the energy to list every shortcoming, but let's just say that nobody is going to call this a well conceived or executed video. The director here is newcomer Jake Sarfaty who — best as I can determine — is not a director at all by trade, but a gaffer and grip who happened to fall into the pop starlet's orbit. Sources tell me that reshoots were planned with prominent production companies and big time directors, but never happened — which is understandable, considering all the drama and chaos that 's enveloping every aspect of her life.
    The only way I can comprehend Spearsgate and the hysteria surrounding this video is that it's all just a situationist prank. It has to be an elaborate hoax to make us realize how defenseless we are to celebrity. I keep hoping to see Malcolm McLaren (or, shit, even Ashton Kutcher) pop up and yell, "Got ya!" But the truth is this: The song is a hit on the charts. The video will be hunted down by way more people online and get more mainstream media attention than anything else this year. But, the real bullshit is how we tell each other how awful we think it is and how Britney's situation is so sad and then keep clicking through to see what happens next. It never quite makes it to the full D’Angelo mode, but when you add in some classic "hottest day of the year" action  you have the kind of summer jam that keeps the ladies happy while never letting the thuggish rap star look TOO soft – as long as nobody scuffs up his new, white Air Jordans. NEW RELEASE: Justin Timberlake "LoveStoned..."

How many hours of your life have you spent idly staring at Windows Media Player's audio visualizers? If you're like me, you spend lots of time at work toggling between the various Plenoptic settings. As it turns out, Justin Timberlake is a big Bars and Waves fan. [editor's note: Video Static is a Mac snob and feels obligated to state that he wastes his time flipping about in the iTunes Cover Flow interface and writing in the third person] For "LoveStoned/I Think She Knows Interlude," director Robert Hales drops JT inside a space-filled scene of animated visualizations and EQs that shimmer and spark around his GQ styling. As the song segues into its interlude, Hales flies us through 2001: A Space Odyssey and into a white version of Tron. There we find Justin surrounded by a futuristic electrical environment, which is when I start to wonder if he's going to turn into a polar bear. "Trapped in the Closet" proved R. Kelly can definitely tell a story. So much so, that he gets a writing credit on his latest clip with a twist ending will have M. Night Shyamalan spinning in his... Well, not really. You will no doubt see the "surprise" coming a mile away, but it's almost charming to see Kells and Usher go through all that trouble just because they may be paddling the same canoe. (You know R. Kelly doesn't like the freaky stuff!) The story is satisfying fun, however, and Little X gets larger than life coverage of the twin superstars. Overall, it works great, even if some player haters out there get the feeling that Usher and Kells are just doing this to preserve their firemen's pensions.
