NEW RELEASE: Gnarls Barkley "Run"

GnarlsJTWhat starts out as a basic spoof of a "crazy fresh" '80s hip-hop dance show —  with Justin Timberlake as the poor white man's Don Cornelius — suddenly gets very hypnotic in this  brand new Gnarls Barkley clip. Zebra stripes and b&w checkerboard patterns collide with one another as Danger Mouse mans the turntables and Cee-Lo lays out a decidedly Crazy croon. --> watch "Run" at MTV.com

IN DEPTH: Menomena "Rotten Hell"

RottenHell Rotten I said it before, I'll say it again. Slo-mo makes everything look better, grander, cooler. Take a food fight, for example. It's juvenile beyond belief and has been played out since at least 1978, when John "Bluto" Blutarsky impersonated a zit and then began filmdom's greatest culinary battle. Enter music video newcomers War And Julius who wisely realized that the only way to save the food fight was with glorious slow motion filmwork that elevates each salvo as if it were part of an epic battle or glorious ballet. That battle of rotten food makes up the video for Menomena's "Rotten Hell." The partnership of War And Julius were kind enough to let us in on the nastiness required to create something so beautiful.

War And Julius, directors: "Who doesn't like a good old fashioned food fight? No one... So, we decided to resurrect the cliche with high speed video technology, allowing us to match the rhythmic ploddings of the band's killer anthem with a slow motion barrage of hypnotic anti-war imagery that we hoped, in the end, would be something all our own.

All the carnage was left to bake for hours under 25,000 watts of lighting and produced what may possibly have been one of the worst smells EVER produced. We were fortunate to have witnessed only two fits of olfactory induced vomiting the entire day. You should be thankful that Smell-o-Vision never caught on."

NEW RELEASE: Muse "Invincible"

MuseNow that the music business is scouring for the new revenue streams — ie: ring tones, increased licensing, video games, product placements, prostitution (yeah, yeah, I made a funny) — the day of the rock band carnival attraction may not be far away. In the meantime, we have this dazzling video which places Muse on a 3-D amusement park ride. Unlike the Walt Disney It's A Small World ride — with its idealistic, unrealistic images of harmony and peace — this journey is a descent into the nasty, brutish and increasingly destructive history of our world. So, make sure you fasten you seatbelts and keep your hands inside the car. It's a savage world, after all. --> watch "Invincible" in Quicktime or via  YouTube

IN DEPTH: Lady Sov "Love Me Or Hate Me"

Lady Sov Despite being hyped as the next big thing, the UK  rap scene seemed in danger of never fulfilling its commercial promise over on these shores. Enter Lady Sovereign. While her massive US deal with Def Jam was initially met with curiosity at best, it's now pretty clear that Jay-Z was onto something when he hedged a big bet on the self-proclaimed Biggest Midget In the Game. Combining just enough authenticity to attract open-minded hip-hop heads, enough of a rebel sensibility for the alternative crowd and the big-time personality to lure everyone else to the table, Lady Sovereign's "Love Me And Hate Me" became the most random — and the funnest — video to hit #1 on MTV's TRL in quite some time. She'll need a lot more hits before the Eminem comparisons are valid  — beyond the sense of humor and, of course, the skin tone — but Lady Sov is off to a hot start.

Director Brian Beletic doles out a few tidbits on the clip:

trim that shit"Sov has a deep distaste for the color pink. One day before we filmed, Sov wasn’t feeling well and someone sent her flowers on my behalf to cheer her up. Pink flowers. Ooops. Oh well. You may notice there is no pink in the video.

Then MI5 chased the East London sports bottle terrorists through our tech scout. Exciting at the time, but now none of us can take water bottles or lip balm on planes. The garbage man with long hair was in 'Dead or Alive' (You spin me right round, baby right round like a record, baby right round). The overweight Sov was a 19 year old look-a-like. The monkeys were a seven year old and a nine year old jumping on a $330,000 Rolls Royce Phantom. The insurance guy was lured away from set with a pretty girl and a lemonade while we shot this scene."

(see photo above of Beletic, on the right, with the very hairy Sov and two groomers)

Shot in the poorest and most devastated areas of his city, Juvenile performs amongst overturned cars, wrecked homes and a landscape of complete destruction. Residents hold up signs spray-painted with such comments as "you already forgot," while three children put on creepy George W. BOOKED: Juvenile - Ben Mor, director

Raised in the notorious Magnolia housing projects in New Orleans and still a resident of the area, Juvenile returns to his hometown to remind viewers of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina. Footage from his tour will be used in a short documentary piece and in a video for the track, "Get Ya Hustle On." Unlike many of the artists who have participated in Katrina relief efforts, Juvenile was personally affected by the catastrophe. His home was destroyed and many of his relatives and friends were trapped in the city and suffered similar losses.

Description: Although this video has been airing for a little bit, the onset of fall marks a fine occasion to revisit Death Cab For Cutie's first video off their major label debut, Plans. The lyrical jumping off point for the "Soul Meets Body" video is the line, "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere." Organic, plant-like musical notes emerge from the ground and float along through the air as singer Benjamin Gibbard makes his way through a forest to join his band mates for a recording session in a remote shack.

Description: A young woman discovers she has the power to make time stand still, speed forward or even run backwards all based on her movements. When she stops walking, everything around her freezes until she makes another move. If she goes forward a couple steps, then everything moves a few clicks as well. A couple steps backwards, however, causes everything to go in reverse. This leads to a couple of weird, and potentially dangerous circumstances as she makes her way through a town. Relient K, meanwhile, are unaffected as they perform on a rooftop.
