NEW RELEASE: The New Pornographers "Myriad Harbor"

Newporn_myriadNewporn_myriad2 Ever wonder how The New Pornographers are able to churn out a seemingly endless series of charming and extraordinarily catchy gems? Maybe it's the hair. Samson got power from his unruly coiffure, so maybe  singer/songwriter Dan Bejar gets his pop smarts from a hairdo that ranges in this animated clip from a neat fro to something that has a life of its own. Whatever you do, Dan, don't trim that shit. We need more hits. --> watch "Myriad Harbor" (Quicktime)

NEW RELEASE: New Pornogrpahers "Challengers"

Not PornographersHand Job Love is a powerful force in this new New Pornographers video by director Darren Pasemko, formerly of the creative collective Fluorescent Hill. Love makes a ghost into a real person. It turns grayscale into lurid, vibrant colors. It heats things up to the point where everything melts, be it the paint on the wall or the hand entwined with your lover's. Use protection, kids. Love's a dangerous thing. --> watch "Challengers" in Quicktime or at YouTube

NEW RELEASE: The Used "Pretty Handsome Awkward"

Used One can have a field day critiquing the often irreconcilable decisions that corporate Standards & Practices departments at video channels like MTV make — see Idolator's Bleepwatch series for a good rundown on bad words like "dope" and "suicidal" — but some videos, like this hallucinatory new Used clip from director Lisa Mann have some pretty undeniable "can't do that on TV" moments. Gratuitous ass shots? Check. Pills? Cocaine? You betcha. But, that's not all: There's also several scenes of projectile vomit, plus a cross-dressing turn by bass player Jeph Howard that proves him to be one Pretty Ugly Awkward chick. And, I'm pretty sure they show his genitalia for a quick second (I didn't have the courage to rewind and pause). Apparently only the vomit made it past Standards, but you can take it all in online. --> watch "Pretty Handsome Awkward"

PROFILE: Floria Sigismondi, Revolver Film Co.

Floria Sigismondi doesn't really require an introduction, but here's a very quick one: She's one of the most renowned and influential directors in music videos thanks to an utterly distinctive visual style. She's directed clips for Marilyn Manson, The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, Muse, David Bowie, Sigur Ros, Interpol, Christina Aguilera and many others. She's also nominated, once again, for several MVPA Awards, including Director Of The Year, Video Of The Year (for Christina Aguilera "Hurt") and a couple genre categories.

job/title: director

First Video: Rita Chiarelli. A sepia toned ghost story shot in a dilapidated farmhouse. I shot the owner who was in his nineties. [watch Rita Chiarelli "This Is My Life"]

Strangest Video: Harem Scarem "Blue." Based upon German expressionism, I created a fairy-tale world in black and white. It was shot on sound stock, which made the contrast super pushy. My mom, Lina, peers through a magnifying glass, enlarging her eyes to the size of her head. My dad plays a bearded hunchback and my sister plays the damsel in distress whose limbs fall apart after a bike accident with a skeleton and crow. [download the video from HaremScarem.net]

What's Next: I have been working and writing some feature film projects. I have released a second book of photography called Immune, published by die gestalten.

NEW RELEASE: k-os "Sunday Morning"

Kos After an intro that makes you expect an after school special parody, this video from k-os settles in as a tribute to high school dances, circa the mid '80s. That is, until the outro — the "Sunday Morning" section — when the eclectic tunesmith finds himself in an oil painting of a peaceful, autumnal landscape. Most of the pleasures here take place at the dance, however, where we're treated to some once stylish styles, step dancing and even a Soul Train dance line. --> watch "Sunday Morning" in Quicktime or at YouTube

NEW RELEASE: Murder City Sparrows

Murder City Sparrows Even though commenting on the problems in Washington, D.C. is something best left to Fugazi, Canadian rockers Murder City Sparrows use "The Hammer Click" as an opportunity to show the violence and poverty that exists within sight of America's Capitol building. It's a sad and very true situation, but not something that needs to be pointed out by America's fair neighbors from the North (ie: Do you see Green Day putting out videos about Ottawa?). Anyway, it's a solid looking video, mixing interviews with local residents and shots of the band performing at an intersection. --> watch "The Hammer Click"

NEW RELEASE: Taking Back Sunday "12 Days of Xmas"

And a Donny BonaduceAs you look upon the now brittle and browning Christmas trees piled-up curbside across the streets of America, it's only proper to pay a little respect to the true meaning of the Holiday. Or not. Taking Back Sunday's very funny rendition of the "12 Days Of Christmas" carol from an AOL Session has been matched to a simple animated clip that borrows the spirit and style of Robert Smigel's Saturday Night Live recurring TV Funhouse feature. The real treat here is the repartee between the band's guitarist/singer Fred Mascherino and lead vocalist Adam Lazzara as they question why somebody would give so many crap gifts for the twelve nights of Christmas. Like, does anybody want two turtle doves? Does anybody even know if turtle doves are turtles or doves? [answer: doves] --> watch "The 12 Days Of Christmas" below or at YouTube

Zoppe meets Martsch Built To Spill
"Conventional Wisdom"
(Warner Bros.)

Shafei & Levitz, directors | Anne Johnson, producer | The Revolver Film Co., production co | Jesse Green, DP | Ed Cardenas, editor | Description: Despite having indie rock guitar god status, Built To Spill mastermind Doug Martsch isn't the type of shredder worshipped in masturbatory guitar playing magazines. "Conventional Wisdom" still won't change that, but it's built upon the kind of massive, hypnotic and undeniably rocking riff that every guitarist dreams of writing. The video does find Martsch donning some leather, studs and chainmail, but it's to recreate medieval times and not for the kind of kickass metal look that would earn him a magazine centerfold. All the jousting, archery and swordplay was done under the tutelage of the video's star, American Jousting Alliance founder James Zoppe. "We met James Zoppe, randomly, while scouting for a little video we were doing about 3 years ago. We limped into this weird general store up in the middle of nowhere (Frazier Park, CA) and asked the teenager behind the counter if she knew of anyone who rented horses. She took a moment, then said we could try old James Zoppe. Her mother heard us from the back of the store and shouted, 'Who wants to know about old James Zoppe?' Well, the rest of the story would take up a lot of  pages and we still wouldn’t be able to express how truly incredible James Zoppe is. He’s a real hero, like a renaissance cowboy. How can you not make a video about that?" -- David Shafei, of Shafei & Levitz -- watch "Conventional Wisdom"

Description: Metric singer Emily Haines is besieged by terrible nightmares in this spooky b&w homage to classic horror flicks. She dreams she's a patient in a "Monster Hospital," where hands attack her from all angles and her bandmates have been turned into bloody zombies. In the end she wakes up and realizes that she's safe and sound. The lyrics are a play on Bobby Fuller's classic, "I Fought The Law," but reworked as the nightmarishly defeatist, but unfortunately true complaint, "I fought the war, but the war won."
