NEW RELEASE: MGMT "Time To Pretend"

MgmtMgmt There are certain primordial needs that cannot be denied. Fire, tribalism and all that other elemental stuff are obvious. But if you're an aspiring rock 'n' roll star it really comes down to this mantra from Brooklyn band MGMT: "Let's make some music, make some money, find some models for wives." This layered little trip of a video is both enthralling and highly hallucinatory as it covers all of the above — even the questing for fire — and shows how we've always fallen prey to our base instincts. Your only hope is to follow the lead of our MGMT heroes and surf a rainbow or ride a kitty to transcendence. And I do mean that literally. I think. --> watch "Time To Pretend"

NEW RELEASE: Ours "Live Again"

Ours Jimmy Gnecco of the chronically overlooked band Ours has the kind of voice that draws in all sorts of superlative comparisons — Jeff Buckley and Thom Yorke are fairly on the mark — and has led to him being dubbed the next big thing since even before the band's Dreamworks major label debut, Distorted Lullabies. The latest believer in the eventual breakthrough of Ours is Rick Rubin, who produced the forthcoming album Mercy and signed the band to Columbia Records. This double-shot clip for "Live Again" and "God Only Wants You" emulates a long lost silent film with Gnecco as a Rasputin character who sacrifices himself to save a child. Years later the child grows up to be a scientist along the lines of Dr. Moreau, striving to create a replica of the  mythical madman who saved him years ago. It's an odd and audacious video, cleverly positioning Gnecco and director Michael Maxxis as heirs apparent to the nightmarish video dream team of Marilyn Manson and Floria Sigismondi. --> watch "Live Again / God Only Wants You"

NEW RELEASE: Coheed & Cambria "Feathers"

Coheed Keeping up appearances as a quintessential 1950s suburban TV family is harder than it seems. It takes serious money to keep food on the table and sometimes you have to get a little creative and find ways to, ahem, stretch your meat. The matron of the lovely Feather family depicted in this new Coheed & Cambria video has come up with an even more ingenius idea, however. Why spend your family's money at the supermarket when there's plenty of opportunity to seduce, butcher and cook all the free range longpig that roam in your own neighborhood? This cannibalistic ode to the 1989 cult classic Parents works like a charm, thanks in large part to director Marc Klasfeld being able to capture all the menace that lurks at the heart of everything that we thought was wholesome about both TV families and the food chain. --> watch "Feathers" via Sony Musicbox or YouTube

Rockhard Films director Marc Klasfeld delivers a parody of the "perfect" nuclear TV family of the 1950s. Get a taste via a teaser clip, a fake wiki page and more at a promo site called Meet The Feathers.

NEW RELEASE: Jesca Hoop "Money"

money Jesca Hoop is possibly the coolest nanny since Mary Poppins. Why? Well, she's certainly purty and has the kind of quirky sensibility that'll play well in alternative circles, but the stamp of approval comes from former employer, Tom Waits, who describes her music as being "like swimming in a lake at night."  Hopefully that factoid won't be an albatross, since there's a homespun delightfulness about her — especially if your introduction is this cut-and-paste playful tweak to those who worship the almighty dollar. --> watch "Money" AND be sure to check out the director Richard Borge's Drawger blog where he shares lots of behind-the-scenes tidbits and pictures

BruceNot Bruce This is a tribute to Winter Versions of Summer Babes (that's a Pavement reference, kids) delivered by Bruce Springsteen on the Jersey Shore. It's not new ground for The Boss — or for director Mark Pellington, for that matter, since the "Lonesome Day" video these two did together is pretty darn similar — but it's where this song takes place and the Shore has been a defining element for Bruce ever since he busted out of Asbury Park.  Bruce  meanders along the sand performing this masterful minor key ode to the Beach Boys while angels from all walks of life flicker in his mind and then pass him by. --> watch "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" (YouTube version... NEW RELEASE: Kelly Rowland "Daylight"

Kelly Here's a smart move by Kelly Rowland: Rather than compete in an escalating glamor competition with her fellow Destiny's Child member Beyonce, Rowland goes for a casual downtown NYC vibe in this video for "Happy."  She hangs at a decidedly simple and ordinary rooftop party with some friends, played by the oh so personable  Travis McCoy and his fellow Gym Class Heroes. It's win/win for all involved: Rowland seems a whole lot happier in this kind of laidback video, while McCoy gets some mainstream experience that may come in handy if he decides to see if anyone has been tapped yet to be the new generation's Will Smith. --> watch "Daylight" via MySpace

NEW RELEASE: Luna Halo "Untouchable"

Luna Halo It's not a steel cage match — and it's not as cool as Scorpions "Rock You Like A Hurricane" —  but things are plenty dangerous in this video for Luna Halo. The band performs from a makeshift, electric fence cage. The contraption is not keep Luna Halo in captivity, but to keep the visiting hooligans from inflicting damage upon our rockers. Brandi CarlileBrandi Carlile I don't know if wine can actually turn to turpentine — although a Google search led me to this interesting link — but I understand the song's sentiment of a good thing that eventually becomes a bit overwhelming and, besides, I believe a pretty song trumps any small gaps in logic and this latest from Brandi Carlile is downright gorgous. The video is rightfully content with beauty as well, showing off lush cinematography of the singer as she browses through old photos and letters —all in an effort to uncover some truth from a haze of memories like turpentine would eat away old paint on a brush. --> watch "Turpentine"

NEW RELEASE: Wyclef Jean "Sweetest Girl"

Wyclef Having a clique/label named Refugee Camp uniquely qualifies Wyclef Jean to solve any/all of the world's immigration problems, but the goal here is a bit more personal: 'Clef wants to make sure "The Sweetest Girl" gets into the country. Despite that stated concern the former Fugee spends most of the video performing this tune on his acoustic and collaborating with Akon and Lil' Wayne inside a refugee camp. Thankfully, the Sweetest Girl ain't so sweet and decides to take matters into her own hands by launching a molotov cocktail and starting a full scale riot among her fellow detainees. The eventual outcome is left TBD as an ending title promises that these "memoirs of an immigrant [are] to be continued."

In Wyclef We Trust     While you wait, however, you should also check the viral video for a totally different vibe. Although the official video is a deadly serious opus with feature film aspirations, this director-uncredited "viral" is way more light-hearted —  nothing more than a constant stream of consciousness visual riffs on the lyrics — and will probably leave you smiling and humming the melody instead of thinking about what you (or Wyclef, or Sally Struthers) can do to save the world.  --> watch "The Sweetest Girl" (or watch "The Sweetest Girl" viral)

NEW RELEASE: Bob Dylan "You Go Your Way..."

Wheres GinsburgWheres Suze Director Rupert Jones takes you on a stroll in with Bob Dylan through the years and his many guises and phases. While it doesn't take you behind the scenes, it does take you literally behind Dylan as an actor recreates some famous moments  — the cover of The Freewheeling Bob Dylan or the "Subterranean Homesick Blues" segment from the film "Don't Look Back" — that every music fan should recognize. Other scenes merely hint at what Dylan was up to, but everything is imbued with a "freewheeling" vibe that reflects the energy of this revampment by omnipresent hitmaker Mark Ronson and backing band The Dap-Kings. Ronson was AWOL from the shoot, as was the D-Man, but the Dap Kings are in full effect and Wyclef Jean makes a cameo — perhaps as a repayment to Dylan for appearing in Clef's "Gone Til November?" --> watch "You Go Your Way..."

Bob Dylan. Remix. No, not as scary as it sounds. NEW RELEASE: Switchfoot "Awakening"

Buster Rocks! Clearly, Switchfoot didn't want a video that took itself too seriously and they get exactly that with "Awakening." The group's free-wheeling, low-ego spirit comes across on-screen with as much focus on comedy and an enjoyably goofy concept as there is on performance and their trademark Owen Wilson-esque surfer good looks. The video features a pair of neighbors — one an office drone played by Tony Hale aka Buster from Arrested Development and the other a slacker-type – who end up battling each other in an on-line video game. This is where the clip gets truly interesting as the game takes over the screen and we get to see what can best be described as the Limited Edition Michel Gondry version of Guitar Hero. Corrugated cardboard and stop-motion visuals abound. Things take another twist when the broham's girl comes home and instead of getting mad that her guy is busy gaming, she busts out some Body Fuzion gear and joins in on the action by tapping out steps on a home-made Dance Dance Revolution quilt-controller. NEW RELEASE: Bob Dylan "When The Deal Goes Down"

Scarlet While Twyla Tharp's The Times They Are A-Changin' desecrates the legacy of Bob Dylan nightly on Broadway, you could probably use a reminder that it is possible to pay tribute to an iconic musical figure without resorting to kitsch. Film director Bennett Miller (Capote) creates a video for "When The Deal Goes Down" that plays like a compilation of summer vacation home movies that could have been pulled from almost any suburban attic — so long as it was the home of actress Scarlett Johansson. The prevailing mood is nostalgia; a feeling which is reinforced by references to various aspects of the Dylan lore: His childhood in Minnesota, shots of such influential works as the Woody Guthrie autobiography Bound For Glory and the Hank Williams album Wanderin' Around, and even Coney Island, which Guthrie called home. -- watch "When The Deal Goes Down"

IN DEPTH: John Mayer "Waiting For The World To Change"

John Mayer While John Mayer takes a ruminative stroll along NYC's East River, a group of graffiti artists decorate the streets with messages that encourage people to pay attention to the precarious state of the world. And, in a nice touch that should pacify those who disapprove of guerrilla artists and other scofflaws, a final message tells viewers that all the artworks were commissioned and done with permission on private property.

Director Philip Andelman fills in the backstory:

The idea came from a brainstorming session between John [Mayer] and I, which started with his fascination with street art.  It turns out he's pretty tight with a lot of the old-school graffiti artists in the city and after a few phone calls we suddenly had this all-star cast.  The group of five is the Tats Cru from the Bronx, the guy with the gas mask is Daze, and the one wearing the Mexican wrestling hat is Futura 2000.  He actually rolled up to set at around 8am wearing that and I burst out laughing.  I thought it was so cool.  He gave me this sly smile and said something to the effect of, "You digging the hat, huh?"  Needless to say, it stayed on the duration of the shoot.Futura and artists at work

We shot John's performance on the first day at sunrise in blistering NYC summer heat. I wanted a feeling of old New York street photography, of John feeling a little vulnerable and introverted, so we put him in this big jacket while the rest of the crew sweated away in t-shirts. After that, we spent two and half days running around the boroughs capturing the various artists tagging walls. Though Daze had previously been commissioned to do his mural, the others were all done based on the song — each artist did some sketches based on conversations we had after all listening to the song, but nothing was concretely laid out before hand. All the walls were private property which we had permission to shoot on, but Futura's friend fell through at the last minute and we were stuck with no location. So, we started rolling around looking for a wall. This guy is about 50 years old, runs a clothing and design empire, hasn't tagged in years  — he told me the last time he did a wall was at the last Documenta for fuck's sake! — and here we are driving around trying to get a shot. You could tell he was having the time of his life, as if he were flashing back to being a 12 year old kid again in the city. -- watch "Waiting For The World To Change"

IN DEPTH: Aberdeen City "God Is Going To Sick Of Me"

God Is Going To Sick Of Me Rock critic Simon Reynolds sums up the credo of post-punk with the title of his recent book about the early years of the genre, Rip It Up And Start Again. That sentiment literally informs this Aberdeen City video, which looks to be constructed of moving images ripped out of various magazines, photographs and posters. Adam Neustadter — who co-directed the video with Pete McCoubrey under the Wormseye banner — takes us in depth on Aberdeen City's "God Is Going To Get Sick Of Me":

The idea was to make a moving collage that had a handmade feel to it, like a school art project. It's supposed to feel like a living scrapbook. We used about eight different cameras — ranging from HD all the way down to a Fisher Price pixelvision camera that records on audio cassette tape — that all shot at once. On the set of God Is Going To Sick Of Me We used all these different formats so each piece of the collage would have it's own unique look. We shot each band member individually, changing wardrobe, instruments, and backdrops each take for more variety. Having all these different elements, we were able to construct the edit to build with the song. Ron Patane and Peter McCoubrey of Wormseye shared editing duties and did all the effects work. Mark DePace of Ghost Robot produced, and Aaron Phillips was DP. -- Adam Neustadter, Wormseye

Description: This video tie-in to The Pink Panther remake starring Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau and Beyonce Knowles as a pop star features a little bit of the trademarked Pink Panther animation and some film footage, but it's mostly a showcase for Beyonce. The singer cavorts in a string of diverse outfits on a stage lined with billowing pink satin sheets, while guest rapper Slim Thug makes a couple quick appearances. Director Hype Williams uses the same trick he's been favoring lately: The main footage is displayed at an extreme aspect ratio with additional footage shown in the parts of the screen that would usually be wasted with black bars.

After merely dreaming of a break for freedom through an open window, Nalick finally acts on the impulse by standing up to her abusive man and then leaving him for good. The aforementioned fire rages behind Nalick as her anger gets worked up, while the freezing air that escapes from the ice box probably illustrates the steely cold emotions she summons up in order to erase their love letters from her memory.

Tabloid headlines keep track of each Elvis sighting until the white suit returns to join Rosebud and the other symbols of lost innocence (or something).
