The entrance to the Deadmines is located in the town of Moonbrook, southwest of Sentinel Hill. The area immediately around the meeting stone is safe, but the town itself is infested with Defias mobs, most of whom are level 15 to 18. To access the instance, you must enter the old barn (coordinates: 42,73) head up the stairs, and drop down into the mine network.

There are a significant number of caverns and mobs before the entrance to the instance proper. Like the Defias in the instance, these mobs will run just before they are about to be killed. It is important to either stop them from running (using spells or abilities) or kill them before they agro other mobs.

Two quests require items from the mine network before the instance entrance. Both are in the same place: the cavern south of the instance entrance. For Oh, Brother… you must kill Foreman Thistlenettle and take his badge. If anyone in you party needs to finish Collecting Memories, the zombies and skeletons in this same area drop the Union Miner's Cards needed for the quest.

There is also a back door to the Deadmines, located in the hills along the coast to the southwest of Moonbrook. This door is an exit only, it cannot be used to enter the instance.

The Instance

The first section is a mine filled with Defias Miners and Overseers. There are a few Defias Wizards patrolling, so be sure to factor them in when you make your pulls. Deeper in the mine, you’ll encounter a room ("2" on the map) with mini-boss Rhakh’zor. When you kill him, the door behind him opens. Past this door, the cavern splits off in two directions.

To the left is Miner Johnson ("3" on the map), who is a rare spawn. To the right after a short passage, is a room ("4" on the map) with several goblins. Patrolling the room is Sneed, who operates a mechanical shredder. Once you destroy the shredder, you then have to kill Sneed himself.

Once Sneed is dead the door at the far side of the room will open. Don’t forget to loot Sneed’s body to complete the quest Undergroud Assault. Past the door, and one more mob, is a large room ("5") with a ramp going down. The goblins in this room tend to be harder than the other mobs you’ve encountered. It’s important to be very careful with your pulls in this area, and choose your targets carefully. It’s wise to take a moment to recon the room and plan out which goblins to target, and in what order. At the far end of the room is mini-boss Gilnid.

Through the door is a cavern that makes a quick right turn. Down the passageway is a small room on the right ("6" on the map). Here you’ll find the Defias Gunpowder, which you’ll need to get through the next door. Have the person carrying the gunpowder activate the cannon ("7"), and it will blow up the door. Past the door is a dock, with Defias Pirates. Work your way to the end of the dock, near the ramp, and you’ll encounter Mr.Smite ("8").

After Mr. Smite, head up the scaffolding. Be aware that much of the scaffolding is narrow and hard to maneuver on.

Cookie is a mini-boss you’ll find on the scaffolding.

At the top scaffolding, you’ll come to the deck of a pirate ship ("9" on the map), and Captain Greenskin. Greenskin has two guards who can’t be pulled without also pulling Greenskin. Try to fight on the edge of the deck closest to where you entered, or pull the three of them down the ramp. In the cabin at the far end of the deck is the final boss, and you don’t want to take on both bosses at the same time.

Once Greenskin is dead, you’ll find Edwin VanCleef in his cabin. VanCleef is the final, and hardest boss in the instance. He also has two body guards, and together they make a formatable force.

Some parties, especially if they are a lower level group or if they’ve had trouble with other bosses in the instance, focus on killing Van Cleef, loot his body, and allow themselves to be killed by his guards. Because Van Cleef is effectively the end of the Deadmines, there’s no need to return to instance. Don’t forget to loot his head for the The Defias Brotherhood. He also drops Unsent Letter, which starts the quest of the same name.

Once you’ve killed and looted VanCleef, you can use your hearthstone or head for the back door ("10" on the map). The back door is located to the east of the ship. Some parties choose to jump off the ship and die, then resurrect themselves in Sentinel Hill.
