Entrance

The front door of Stratholme is located in the Eastern Plaguelands, north of Plaguewood. This entrance is a one way door: characters cannot leave through this portal. They must either teleport, die and be resurrected in the graveyard, or fight through the instance to the back door. The back door of the instance, called the service entrance, is located east of the front door, set into the hills that border the Eastern Plaguelands. The key to the city, found in Stratholme, is necessary to use this entrance. A rogue with a high lockpicking skill can also open it. Characters can use this entrance to resurrect themselves if they die in the instance and do not wish to be trapped in the front door.

Instance

Because of its size, Stratholme is often divided into two sides. The west side is a mix of undead and Scarlet Crusade, and is called the “live side.” The east side deals almost entirely with undead, and is often called the “dead side.” It’s common for parties to run only one side, then come back at a later time to run the other.

Live Side

If you want to complete this side of the instance, someone in your party must have the Scarlet Key, found in the The Scarlet Monastery, or a rogue that can pick the lock to the Scarlet Bastion.

The live side is most easily accessible by the front entrance, just north of the meeting stone.

Throughout the center of the instance, you may notice crates against the walls. Some of these crates can be opened. Most of them are booby traps or filled with small but numerous hostile creatures. Some are filled with items, including the water for the Houses of the Holy quest. To avert a possible argument in the instance, your party should decide how to divide up the loot from these crates before you enter.

The mobs in the first section consist of undead, in large groups of mixed elite and non-elite. Use whatever crowd control you can, including the priest spell shackle undead. Good AoE spells are very helpful, perhaps necessary for taking out the non-elites you encounter.

In this section you may see a black ghost appear: the Eye of Naxxramas. Be sure to attack and kill it as soon as you see it. If you don’t, it will summon two elite gargoyles.

Ghostly Citizens also wander this section. They will not attack unless attacked first, so keep an eye out for them before you use any AoE weapons or spells. Ghostly Citizens are needed for the The Restless Souls quest. To complete the quest, use Egan’s Blaster on them. They will morph into several balls of light that zip all around you. Use the blaster on each of these balls of light. If you accidentally aggro a citizen during a fight, you can also use the blaster to neutralize it before it does too much damage.

Unstitched horrors (?) patrol the halls. Factor them in when making your pulls. They are quite powerful, and if they add during a fight, your group could easily wipe.

At the end of the first street, make a left turn, then stop and look around. To your left you’ll see a dead end with a fountain, and to the right the street will slope down. You’ll probably want to clear this whole area.

If you have the quest The Great Fras Siabi you’ll see a box at the dead end that you can click on. When you do, Fras Siabi appears and attacks your party.

Here you’ll also see the first of six post boxes. The Stratholme Courier drops keys to three of the boxes. He should have been in one of the groups you just encountered, and your party probably killed him without really realizing it If you use the proper key on the box, three undead mailmen will spawn and attack. Inside the first two boxes (no matter what order you open them in) are worthless grey items. The third box you open will spawn Postmaster Malown, who drops high level loot.

To the north you’ll see an open gate, and a room with several boxes. Entering this area will cause the gates in front and behind you to close, and a large group of rats will attack. These rats can be deadly if you don’t have an AoE capability. Once the rats are dead, both gates will open.

Next, you’ll find more undead. Continue northwest, fighting as you go. To your left, you’ll see an open gate, and to your right, another group of undead. You can clear this undead group if you still need Stratholme holy water, or you can bypass them.

Past the double gates on your left, you’ll see your first group of Scarlet Crusade standing in front of the Scarlet Bastion. Although fewer in number than the undead you’ve been fighting, each is very powerful. They pull in groups of three and sometimes four, so be sure to use whatever humanoid crowd control you have. Keep in mind that these mobs are runners. Do whatever you can to keep them from pulling their friends into the battle.

This far into the instance, some groups become accustomed to fighting large groups of undead. They have trouble switching to smaller groups of humanoids found here and wipe once or twice before they adjust.

This first courtyard requires careful pulls and good crowd control. Rogues sometimes have a hard time maneuvering around the hay bales to sap.

Once the area is clear, Timmy the Cruel will spawn on the south side of the courtyard.

Open the door to Scarlet Bastion with the Scarlet Key, or your party’s rogue. Inside you’ll find a room to clear, then a hallway. The hallway has two patrols to deal with. Also undead skeletons will charge through the front door and attack your rear at random intervals. Alone they aren’t too hard to deal with, but they can be difficult if they charge in while you’re fighting the Scarlet Crusade.

This hallway has two doors, one on the north side and one on the south side.

The north door requires the scarlet key or rogue, and can be skipped if you wish. It leads to Cannon Master Willey. If you want to kill him, head down the stairs and through several rooms of crusaders. In one of these rooms is the Crimson Hammersmith, a blacksmith trainer who teaches the hammersmith specialization.

Eventually you’ll find Cannon Master Willey, behind his cannons. When you attack, a group of riflemen spawn behind him. To defeat him, loot the stacks of cannonballs, then click on one of the cannons to use them against Willey and his riflemen.

Head back up the stairs, and take the southern door. Clear more crusaders and go to the end of the hallway.

To your left you’ll see a small room with Archivist Galford. He has AOE, and a dot/stun spell that can be dispelled. Once he’s dead, look for the painting on the wall of his room to complete the quest Of Love and Family. Also if you have the quest The Archivist you or someone in your party must burn the archive located here.

To the Southwest you’ll find Grand Crusader Dathrohan. He doesn’t use any tricks until he gets down to half his hit points, when he transforms into the demon Balnazzar. He becomes far more powerful, including the use of charm and fear spells. He drops the Head of Balnazzar, which starts a quest that will take you to the dead side of the instance.

After this fight, you may as well hearthstone back home because you can’t get out the front door anyway.

You can also go out the service entrence if you wish. If you don’t have the key to the city, you can pick it up on the way there. Head out of the Scarlet Bastion, and back to the street that leads to the front door. Start fighting your way east. You’ll have to fight through the a significant number of undead mobs. But eventually you’ll come to Magistrate Barthilas in the southeastern most courtyard. Kill him and he will drop the one key to the city. The service entrance gate is on the south side of the courtyard.

Dead Side

If you’re running the dead side, you’ll save quite a bit of time if you use the service entrance. This requires the key to the city or a rogue with a lockpicking skill of 275 or higher. If you go through the front door, fight your way down the first street, then right at the first intersection. Keep fighting to the east until you reach the service entrance.

Clear the courtyard near the service entrance. In the small chapel you’ll find Aurius. If you have the Medallion of Faith turn it in to him. Head north out of the courtyard.

The next section is called the Gauntlet. It’s a street that runs in a circle. Around the outside of the circle are three ziggurats, with a boss in each. The street is filled with tightly packed undead mobs. There are bats called rockwing screechers that move fast and patrol around the circle. They have an AoE fear, so when you pull them, get them as far away from the other mobs as you can. The banshees here have a silence spell, so it helps to keep your healer as far away as possible and still be in healing range. The scarabs have a silence/entangle spell. Clearing the street will take quite a bit of time.

Work your way to the right, and clear out the space in front of the ziggurat. On the stairs to the ziggurat you’ll see Baroness Anastari. She uses an AoE silence spell, so keep your party’s spellcasters a good distance away. She also uses a mind control ability. One of your party members (or you) will begin attacking the rest of your party. She will do as much damage to the party as possible, and burn up the character’s mana and long cooldown abilities. She also disappears during this time, so you can’t hurt her while this is happening.

On the ground near this ziggurat are blacksmithing plans. If you pick them up you will be attacked by the Black Guard Swordsmith.

Enter the ziggurat and you’ll encounter a few non-elite mobs. Killing them will destroy the ziggurat. You have to destroy all three to continue to the second half of the instance. If you have the The Active Agent quest, in one of the three ziggurats (it’s random) will be a small box. The boxes are small and easy to miss, so look carefully.

Head back to the west and clear yet more mobs from the street. You’ll see another ziggurat, with Nerub’Enkan in front of it. He’s easier than Baroness Anastari; his only trick is that he summons scarabs, which can be dispatched with your AoE.

Now make your way to the third ziggurat. You can either head north, then east, or you can go back to Baroness Anastari’s ziggurat and go north from there.

In front of this ziggurat you’ll encounter some new patrols that have to be taken out, and more undead mobs that have to be carefully pulled. On the stairs you’ll find Maleki the Pallid. The minions around him can be pulled without him if you’re careful, and it makes the fight against him much easier. He has a drain life/mana spell, but he’s not as hard as the other two bosses you just fought.

When you destroy the third ziggurat you’ll hear a message that the slaughterhouse is open.

Head northeast to the gate, but rest up before any member of your party crosses it. Once you do, wave after wave of mobs will attack. Do what you can to conserve health and mana, and bandage and drink when you can.

After a few waves of attackers, Ramstein the Gorer attacks. Don’t forget to loot his head for the Ramstein Dungeon quest.

After he’s dead, you’ll get a swarm of skeletons that are vulnerable to AoE attacks. Finally, you’ll get five elite skeletons. Use whatever crowd control you have.

Finally move inside to take a look at Baron Rivendare. He uses an AoE shadow spell, so keep your ranged attackers and healers far away, and use whatever shadow resistance buffs you may have. He also summons waves of skeletons. If they aren’t killed quickly, Rivendale uses them to heal himself. AoE spells work well against the skeletons, but your caster has to be careful not to loiter in range of Rivendare’s own AoE spell. Rivendare is a difficult boss, and it’s rare for a party to kill him on the first attempt.

If you gave Aurius the Medallion of Faith earlier in the instance, he will come and help you during the fight.

Once you’ve killed him loot his head for the Above and Beyond quest.

You can now walk out the service entrance, or use your hearthstone to leave the instance.
