What Sort of WoW Site Should We Be?

I'm sure that anybody reading this is aware that there are other World of Warcraft sites out there. WoWWiki for example is a great site. The thing is, WoWWiki often gives a bunch of information about Warcraft novels and the WoW storyline (check out their article on the Battle for Mount Hyjal for an example). If you're just looking for information about how to complete a quest or where a particular NPC is, that information can be hard to find. I often to go one the the "database" sites like Thotbot, but you usually get just a bunch of people telling you how they soloed it with a level 43 Rogue.

I propose that the WoW section of WikiCheats be a "Just the facts, Ma'am" source of information. If you're looking to find out where someone is, how to defeat a boss, or how to finish a quest we'd have that information in a way that's easy to find. -- Rob

Re: What Sort of WoW Site Should We Be?

Yeah I definitely agree. There's plenty of sites out there (worldofwarcraft.com included) to read up on the story, and I don't think that's what we should aim for here. Your last sentence pretty much sums it up. Of course, building a large database of quests is going to be tough no doubt. But it'll be presented in a manner where people can look at it, read a paragraph or two, and know where to go and what to do. -- Colddweller

"The" issues

World of Warcraft often places "the" in front of place names. The Undercity and The Blasted Lands are two examples. Other times the name doesn't have a "the" when you expect it would (Searing Gorge).

This doesn't matter much, except when dealing with article names (and links to those articles). To make things easier I've started putting redirects where there might be confusion. I'm sure to miss a few, so if you see an article that may or may not have a "the" and there is no redirect from the incorrect title to the correct one, add it in. -- Rob 13:38, 8 November 2007 (EST)

Class Spells/Abilities

I started making a table for the Druid class abilities, and I figured instead of putting all the information into a table (it gets very congested) to instead put it into that spell's individual page. An example is for the Druid's Healing Touch. There a user can see the ability in a box similar to that from the actual game. My question is, should we make pages for each individual spell/ability, or just a general page? With either case, there are other things that need to be said about certain spells/abilities (such as if that spell requires a talent, otherwise someone will think anyone can get it), which suggests the need for an overarching description (which could be duplicated for each rank's page, or just once on a general page). There's a lot of things that could be done, but what are some thoughts?

And in regards to the issue above ("The" problems), it might also be wise to redirect some pages in the reverse fashion (for instance, if someone wanted to go to World_of_Warcraft/Undercity instead of /The_Undercity, it would redirect that way too).

I think giving each spell its own article is a great idea. The only thing I'd suggest is instead of giving each rank its own page, to make one article for the spell, and give each rank a subheading. This way we can still link directly to a particular rank, but won't have to deal with as many separate pages. For links, instead of "World_of_Warcraft/Druid/Healing_Touch_(Rank_1)" we'd have "World_of_Warcraft/Druid/Healing_Touch#Rank_1"
BTW, I love the spell box template. Rob
I went ahead and set up a slightly different table for Priest spells. This one has only really important information about the spell, with the rest on that spell's page. -- Rob
Yeah, I keep debating what to do with the table I'm working on, and I keep thinking wouldn't it just be nice to have AJAX tooltips? I found a bbcode hack for item tooltips, of course I don't know if bbcode parsing can be applied outside the forum. Anyway, I decided originally not to put in the description for spells because some are pretty darn long, even when only including the important info. Whatever, someone else can clean up the mess later, this sh*t takes long enough already :P http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=576155&st=0&sk=t&sd=a --Colddweller

Bestiary

I'd like to see the Bestiary sections updated soon. I was thinking about making separate sections for Rare Mobs because that's what visitors would look for the most. How should these sections be lain out? I'll be glad to work on them. - Aziek

I think doing just rare/elite mobs is a great idea. I was thinking of organizing it by zone, so there would be one page will all the mobs for that zone. Right now there is a "Bestiary" link in each zone's heading box. Click on that and start adding whatever information you can. A good format might be:
  • Name:
  • Level: (could be a level range)
  • Special attacks/abilities:
  • Location: (where it usually is, either a description or a screenshot of a map with a location highlighted)
  • Quests (if any) that it's associated with:
  • Place for a screen shot of the mob.
  • Place for general information.
Of course, that's just my suggestion. Anybody that's willing to make the effort to do something can do it anyway they like. If you have any questions or anything, post it here or PM me in the forums. -- Rob

Raid Walkthroughs and Attunements

I'd like to write some Raiding and Attunement Walkthroughs. How do I make a walkthrough page under Onyxia's Lair for example? TIA -- Aziek

On the main WoW page there is a list of raid instances. Clicking on any of those will bring up a blank page for you to edit. Type in whatever information you want, and hit save. I think the best way to present the attunement info is in the article on the raid, but I suppose you could write one article with info on all attunements. -- Rob

Region Level Info

I added level info to the region list. This should help people see what regions are available for their level. I also plan to put a map (with labels) on the right hand side so people can see where the region is. Finally, in the future we should have the ability to make tables sortable. This will let users sort the regions by level, name or whatever. As soon as this ability is available we'll put it on these tables. -- Rob
