Pictures for a cool break...

Sanjay Bhattacharyya recently held his first photo exhibition

STUNNING! One of Sanjay Bhattacharyya's pictures

Around 20 years ago, well-known painter Sanjay Bhattacharyya started taking photographs. This past week, he put up his first exhibition of photographs, Panorama, at Taj Palace hotel in New Delhi.

His pictures, 50 in number, were taken at Santiniketan — his alma mater — as well as in Guwahati, Shillong, Cherrapunji and New Delhi. They include landscapes, birds, animals and people with shades of emotion, all unposed. The proceeds from the sales of the photographs would go to Khushi, an NGO working for underprivileged children.

Says Sanjay, "I have a contract with some organisations through which I will donate Rs.80 lakh per year for various charitable causes. One of the organisations is a Spain-based company Lladro that employs differently-abled people. Talks with the Park hotel group are on. My photographs costing Rs.10,000 each would be sold for the cause. I would also donate my 12x16-inch photographs for the same. "

For charity

So, how did a painter become a photographer? "I have been taking pictures for two decades. No one said I was good at it earlier. When even professional photographers started saying that I was doing a good job, I exhibited my works. It is like a good break for me, which will not only keep me rooted but also provide me an avenue I always wanted to explore. For this exhibition I finished 2500 rolls," says Sanjay. Incidentally, Sanjay uses a K-1000 Pentax camera for his works.
