A bunch of collages create a culture centrepiece

COLOURS OF A COLLAGE One of Mala Roy's creation is a take on Friends
One day in the Mumbai suburb of Malad, Mala Roy could not sleep in her apartment. Her episode of insomnia led her to bring out the pile of old magazines and a pair of scissors. Overnight, the magazines lost their form and her door got an identity.
The door got plastered with scattered images from the magazines and words.
She created a witty pastiche out of raddi, and a continuum of her effort is on show at Ofen, the bakery on Rd no 10, Banjara Hills.
It is not high art nor does Mala Roy have any illusions of being an artist. "I try to create a certain colour scheme, a pattern and a mood with my words and images that are cut out of magazines," she says.
"I am looking at a world where people are interested in adding some visual appeal to their room, they buy the collages I have done and voila!
Their room is transformed," says Mala Roy who is even willing to customise the collages. The collages that are on show bring together images and words from popular culture like TV serials, advertisements and music.
And what you have is a multi-hued rectangle that reflects life and culture.
If Andy Warhol can convert an iconic image of Marilyn Monroe into public art, if a photograph of Che Guevera can be transformed into a T-shirt revolution, surely Mala Roy's collages too have their place on the walls.
