An exhibition of Shankar Lee's works in different mediums
|
M.A. Shankarlingam aka Shankar Lee, an alumnus of the College of Fine Arts, Chennai, is exhibiting various works in different mediums at the Vinnyasa Premier Gallery. Though he majored in Commerical Art and Industrial Design, he shows obvious talent in handling the mediums and techniques. Nevertheless, the question remains whether the skill has been put to proper use in depicting the multifarious themes.
Landscapes, just by themselves, or with a woman indulging in narcissism in a stream, appear decent in terms of handling of the technique. There is also a sense of voyeurism in the latter types. But, one can't help wondering if they had been copied from photographs. Similarly, the paintings of bronze sculptures of deities are so realistic that they could be painted over photographs.
Shankar Lee has a propensity for mixed images like `trick shots'. In one view, the imagery looks like the face of a lion or a dog. A second glance would reveal a human form in a not particularly desirable posture. Also are seen copies of paintings of European masters such as Rembrandt.
The show ends today (February 28).
