Welcome To The Football Fan-tasy Report 2007

Where would we be if we didn't daydream now and again?

Whether it's a big house in the country, winning the Pools and quitting work, marrying Angelina Jolie or watching your kids graduate from university, we all dream of what life could be like in the future. Some dreams we can achieve; others are, and will remain, pure fantasy.

As football fans, we're no different.

Our hopes - and fears - for the future of our teams will vary (Manchester United and Macclesfield Town fans are unlikely to have the same ambitions!) but we all have them. We have hope in our hearts.

But are those hopes justified? Do football fans have their feet on the ground or their heads in the clouds?

With the help of our friends at the Football Fans Census, we asked almost 6,000 fans from the 92 Premiership and Football League clubs what their expectations were for their clubs over the next five years.

We asked them:

Where do you think your team will be in five years' time? Which division, and which position?

From the Johnstone's Paint Trophy to the Champions League, which trophies (if any) do you think your club has a chance of winning by 2012?

Will your current manager still be at the club then? If not, how many managers do you think will have replaced him?

Will the club be financially strong or on the verge of bankruptcy, or somewhere in between?

We then analysed every fan's responses against each club's record over the past five years and, based on those statistics, looked ahead another five years. Did the record books match the fans' expectations? How realistic were those hopes?

From all this data we have created the Dreamers Index - a unique club-by-club, fan-by-fan guide that separates the realists from the optimists, the downbeat from the fantasists. Where are you on that scale, and where are the rest of your club's fans?

Read on to find out - and keep on dreaming!
