Blu-ray Cannot Contain Metal Gear Solid 4's Awesomeness

The one technical advantage Blu-ray held over HD DVD is that Blu-ray discs hold more stuff, 50GB on a dual-layer disc. But that's still not enough for Metal Gear Solid 4 in all its glory, according to creator Hideo Kojima:
Kojima: For us, we're not still not satisfied with the quality we can do. You know, there's not capacity space.

Sony came out and confirmed that they're still on for a late 2008 release. Now you can sleep easier, I'm sure. You're welcome. [Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog via Mobility Today]

MacBook Air Selling Like Extremely Expensive Hotcakes?

Apparently, the MacBook Air is selling well enough to be unavailable in many stores and require a 5-7 day wait for online orders. Despite the high price, the super-thin laptop is often selling out the day a shipment arrives at an Apple Store, according to research done by Ars Technica. Of course, without knowing just how many MacBook Airs Apple is manufacturing, this could just as easily be a case of Apple not making all too many in the first place, making demand seem higher than it really is. What do you guys think, have you seen lots of them out in the wild or is this just a case of distorted perceptions? [Ars Technica]

bookseat

Bookseat: the Book Storage Chair for Small Libraries

Useful if you have a really really small apartment, or you just appreciate bookshelf-cum-furniture design, the plywood Bookseat stores your TV Guide copy of War and Peace handily within reach. Alternatively, if you think books are old hat, you could store your DVDs and computer mags in it. Some might think Bookseat is design convergence gone mad, but we think it's simple, neat and that you'll be seeing it in waiting rooms of trendy offices everywhere. Available sometime in Spring, price unknown. [Fishbol furniture via Freshome]

iogearpen.jpg Digital Ink

Iogear Mobile Digital Scribe Writes Anywhere

The updated Iogear Mobile Scribe captures 50 pages of your handwriting and doodles on any surface, using normal ink, and without the need to be connected to a computer like the previous Digital Scribe GPEN100C. This storage capability is more than enough for a full day of classes and meetings, but short of the 250 pages necessary to do anything really useful. And with useful I really mean full-length stickmen animations. Full specs after the jump: more »

SamsungF1HardDrive.jpg Upgrades

Sony Increases Hard Drive Storage Fivefold

Sony has announced that they've increased hard drive storage capacity by five times through developing a new method of writing information that's viable even for notebooks. Instead of writing via magnetics, the new system resembles current optical technologies, using a hybrid magnet/laser to write information to a disk at densities of 125GB/square inch. As we understand it, most elements of the traditional hard drive stay intact, but your current 320GB hard drive setup would see data storage reaching 1.6TB. Of course, there are no immediate plans for mass production. [itplus via electronista]

TomTom

TomTom Go 930 and Go 730 IQ Route Knows Best Way to Go On Monday or Saturday

The TomTom Go 730 and Go 930 are refreshes of their 720 and 920, with two new headlining features: IQ route and advanced lane guidance. Using data collected over the last year from other TomTom devices, IQ route actually tells you the best way to go depending on the day—like, the freeway on Saturday afternoon, but backroads on a Monday morning. Right now it's only by day, but as they collect more data, it'll be increasingly specific—morning vs. night, etc. Advanced lane guidance is basically a little movie demo of massive highway junctions and turnoffs, so you don't take the wrong one. Full specs below. more »

Asimov's Law Weighing Machines: Scales That Lie

No one likes learning their weight from a set of scales, so Alice Wang's new concept devices take inspiration from Asimov's First Law of Robotics to protect you from the cruel truth. Her three scales are designed to not "harm a human being " (i.e. you) by either requiring another person to read them or just flat-out lying to you. Dieting would never feel the same again. more »

Rotating Home Theater Makes Our Couch Look Like Garbage

While we enjoyed the Batman home theater and the Star Trek home theater, neither system was really practical for—we'll just say it—normal people. How To: Power Your Computer With Car Batteries

Taking a lesson from the Tim Allen school of modding, one man rebuilt his UPS with a bit more kick. Because the UPS was only able to run his RAID-wielding desktop for three minutes before shutting down, he decided to add two 24V car batteries to the equation (the maximum that his UPS could tolerate). The good news: it worked, and will run his computer for an hour plus.

The bad news is that these larger lead acid batteries are not sealed, and will be releasing some not-so-good gases into his computer room. Hit the movie at about halfway for the money shot. [techspot]

Handcuffs

ZeroPointZero Watch Handcuffs Get Us All OneHundredPointZero Under the Collar

Designer Luis Beruman's new ZeroPointZero concept is a set of digital watch handcuffs. Yes, that's handcuffs, guys: snap them onto your own wrist for that cool jailhouse look, or share some happy time with a friend. We know very little about them apart from the photos in the gallery. Nevertheless, this fetishistic concept has got us all excitable, and we want them made into a real product. Now. Please? [LuisBerumen via TFTS]

Mac Mini Gets Steampunked for Wedding and We Say Yes!

dj-4a.jpg

I have never been a big fan of steampunk computers (LEGO steampunk is a completely different matter, though) but I have to admit that this Apple Mac mini is actually so simple and elegant that I would actually like to have it myself. The complete set after the jump—with Gilliamesque keyboard or the Nautilus-style flat screen included—is very nice, but the mini itself is just perfect.

DIY

Apple Floppy Drive Amp Mod is Retrofabulous

Check out this fantastic DIY project, which involves an Apple PC 5.2 Floppy Drive being modded into a fully functioning amp. I think you will agree; it looks quite amazing. The amp has four speaker terminals, face-mounted volume control, an RCA stereo jack and styling that makes us drool all over our now weakened knees. If you're willing to make the $5.99 investment for the floppy drive, give this awesome project a shot. If we weren't so lazy/cursed with abysmal soldering skills, we certainly would. [Instructables]

For those of you who don't like Uhura-like Bluetooth headsets that stick out of your ear, the new U&I; Capella UIBS700 headset is a necklace-style alternative that does stereo sound. Its slightly old-school-styled case fits in a small LCD screen and also comes with a 1.2W per-channel speaker add-on. It's got enough battery power for eight hours of talk and 200 hours standby. It's Bluetooth 2.0 and supports auto-switching, so your phone can cut in over your music. We'll know pricing and release data info after CeBIT. [Aving]
