Oslo is the capital of Norway. It has a population of approximately 500,000.
The artificial 400 m track Valle Hovin was opened in 1966, as the first artificial ice rink in Norway. The track was a substitute venue as an international venue for Bislett, where the ice conditions depended on the weather. The first time it had to take over was during 1973 World Sprint Championships, and as a World Allround Championships venue it had to take over in 1989. This marked the end of Bislett as a speed skating track, and since then Valle Hovin has been the main speed skating venue in Oslo. The stadium is also used for bandy matches and for rock concerts.
