Kirov is a Russian city, with a population of approximately 410,000. The city is named after the Russian politician Sergey Kirov who was killed in 1934.
The Kirov Prize is an annual tournament, first held in 1889, hosted in Kirov. The tournament has attracted international guests, at least in some periods. In 1946 Norwegian Odd Lundberg won the Kirov Prize. During the 1970s and 1980s skaters from most of the Eastern-European and other communist countries took part.
Two World Records are set in Kirov, both by Rimma Zhukova in March 1950. Triple World Champion Maria Isakova was born in Kirov.
