Thanks for your input, Kevin. It's true, injuries that don't cost much should still be focused on. However, when you're trying to triage many injuries, where do you begin to target your efforts? Most safety professionals will say start with frequency then focus on severity. In 600 words, it's never possible for me to say all I need to say about a subject. As I noted, cost is only one of the factors listed.

The article betrays the risk management criteria that infuriates me as a safety professional. Nancy chooses which workplace hazard to focus on by the dollar cost of the injury. On this criteria a back injury is more important than an eye injury. I suggest that she tries explaining that to the person who has a facial disfigurement or visual impairment. Cost is important but it should not be the first criteria assessed in reducing harm in the workplace ...
