Indigenous population in Brazil

As a whole, the indian population has been growing during the last 25 years, although some specific peoples have decreased in number and some others are even threatened to disappear. Among the indian peoples in Brazil at present, listed by the ISA (ver general table), 12 have populations between 2 and 38 individuals!

From the 218 peoples listed, 40 (18.5%) have part of their population living abroad (in another country or other countries). Even when there is demographic information on that subject, it becomes clear that these parts have not been considered in the global estimate to Brazil or in the present classification:

  • 61 peoples (28.2%) have a population of up to 200 individuals;
  • 50 (23.1%) between 201-500;
  • 37 (17.1%) between 501-1.000;
  • 43 (19.9%) between 1.001-5.000;
  • 09 (4.1%) between 5.001-10.000;
  • 05 (2.3%) between 10.001-20000;
  • 01 between 20001-30000;
  • and 02 with more than 30.000.
