Polish Blues in Chelsea

vladmirstreetperformer49.jpg NY Times' City Room published an inspiring interview with Vladmir Laksin, 57, a Polish immigrant-turned-street performer, today. After losing "all his teeth, his woman and — worst of all — his apartment" a few years ago, Laksin began playing the blues on the corner of 23rd Street and 7th Avenue and has been churning out his take on everything from Clapton and Hendrix to B.B. King ever since. For video of Laksin performing and more, follow the link. [NY Times]

NY Magazine celebrates an often overwritten city with a list of quintessentially New York books. Given a space on the relatively short list are books with enough "New Yorkitude." Rem Koolhaas' Delirious New York, Don DeLillo's Great Jones Street, and Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities all made the cut. [via]

Pittsburgh

The Cupcakes of Pittsburgh

mainpiccupcakespittsburgh.jpg Pittsburgh tends to be several years behind on most trends (like dropping that outlawed "h"), so the recent onslaught of, you guessed it, cupcake bakeries should come as no surprise. Speaking of the tardy factor, though, if you are ever in need of a successful business concept, take a look at what the "cool" cities are doing, copy them, and then haul your ass to the steel town and set up shop. Anyway, cupcakes! Last year, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the prominent newspaper in town, conducted a taste test of the city's cupcake offerings, utilizing a panel of "judges" from the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute. The results? A supermarket chain's mass-produced version, reeking of chemicals, beat out most of the other offerings. That's Pittsburgh for you! Luckily, there are plenty of other alternatives for discerning palates, from the old, traditional mom-and-pop bakeries to the glitzier cafes run by a younger breed of newcomers. They do indeed take the cake. (photo) map »

NYC Subway Singer Rocks the 2 Train

nycsubwayrocker.jpg Most subway performers in New York City are completely sucktastic. The guy in this video might not be the greatest musician, but he's comedy gold. This may very well be the funniest (intentionally) funny underground performance I've ever seen. It involves Kool-Aid, a hilarious remix of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," and a request for free weed. The sound quality isn't the best, but if you have trouble following along, the enterprising Youtuber who posted this clip also provided a full transcript. The clip's after the jump, because just as subway singers needs your spare change and extra drugs, I need your pageviews (or extra drugs). kthnxbai. More »

Just two weeks after American Airlines canceled hundreds of flights for safety inspections, they're experiencing some unpleasant deja-vu. On top of the 500 flights canceled yesterday so that the airline could inspect its MD-80 planes, the latest reports are estimating up to of 1,000 cancellations today. All this concern is due to worries over "widespread airline outsourcing of maintenance that used to be done in-house." After the jump: the Daily Show's take on all the airplane snafus that keep popping up, even after Samuel L. Jackson got rid of the mothereffing snakes. [MSNBC]

An R-Rated Response to Deltalina (Sexy Finger Wagging Included)

sexydeltalinavideorespnse49.jpg It was only a matter of time until someone posted a response to Internet phenomenon Deltalina — the redheaded, Angelina Jolie-esque stewardess who stars in the air carrier's new safety video. One parody that the fine folks at Funny or Die have provided is ridden with sexual innuendoes, dildos and a truly amazing take on Deltalina's finger wag. Their faux flight attendant (pictured here with a condom in her hands) even manages to get a few real flying facts in between talk of her "buttered tits" and "greasy ass." For instance, "If you're seated at an emergency exit, then you're f***ing lucky." Video (most definitely NSFW) after the jump. More »

Washington DC

The Sex and Swingers Clubs of the DC Area

1430379301_e77f936b59.jpg Whether you are a bi-curious woman who's part of a couple, a hardcore swinger without time for idle chitchat, a bear into the leather scene, someone who thinks fat-bottomed girls make the rockin' world go 'round, a confused man willing to put part of yourself into a hole in a wall and hope for the best, an elderly homosexual into autoeroticism, or a dedicated practitioner of doggystyle, Washington, DC, has a club for you. Although these sex and swingers clubs cater to a wide range of interests, most them have another thing in common: they bill themselves as "classy." (For the record, and to protect my wife's integrity, all research for this piece was conducted online or through interviews. And what's below the jump is NSFW, unless of course you work for Gridskipper.) (photo) map »

After losing nearly 1 billion Hong Kong dollars since its launch in October 2006, Oasis, a Hong Kong-based budget airline, has closed. The flying money pit, which operated daily flights from Hong Kong to Vancouver and London, applied for liquidation Wednesday. The airline has suspended all flights and is seeking new investors. A study by the University of Hong Kong's Li-Hai Tan, a professor of linguistics and brain and cognitive sciences, has found that dyslexia affects different parts of children's brains depending on whether they are reading an alphabetically written language or a symbol-based one. As a result, some dyslexics may have an easier time reading Chinese than English. [via]

The Simpsons has been deemed "inappropriate" by Venezuelan government officials and removed from its 9:30a.m. slot on national television. Taking its place is Baywatch Hawaii, a reincarnation of the original t&a0-heavy; show about lifeguards. Funny how David Hasselhoff, someone who has struggled with alcoholism, and Yasmine Bleeth, a former cocaine addict, are considered better role models than Bart and Lisa. [BBC]

Los Angeles Art Weekend 2008

los-angeles-la-art-weekend-2008.jpg When you hear a person say that they love Los Angeles but wish it had more "culture," you have to realize that it is really just a more acceptable way of saying, "I would live in New York, but I am a huge pussy about the cold." We've brought you guides to classic museums and some unusual museums, as well as downtown's culture district. This Thursday through Sunday also marks the first LA Art Weekend open for public consumption, giving everybody a chance to get a little more cultured. We've listed some of the top draws for this year's weekend to help you get started, but make sure to check out the website for the full list of events and exhibits. map »

Swedish liquormaker Absolut Vodka has pulled an ad showing a map of North America from before the US stole nearly half of Mexico's land during the Mexican-American War and the Annexation of Texas. The ad only ran South of the border, but it managed to draw the ire of conservatives who watch Mexico's every move because they are scared of brown people. Thank god Absolut didn't dare to make an ad wishing anyone "Happy Holidays," then the right-wing culture warriors really would have been pissed. There's no word on whether or not Bill O'Reilly or Lou Dobbs is trying to start a movement to build a fence between the US and Scandinavia yet, but I'd recommend stocking up on lutefisk and cheap modish furniture just in case. Paris Apartment Hotels

paris-apartment-hotels.jpg Paris has its share of cold, corporate, kitchenette-laden apartment hotels for businesspeople on a budget. But that's not what we're talking about here. A few more high-end properties have opened up in Paris over the last few years, offering people who want to rent an apartment the conveniences of someone else's home without the inconvenience of their clutter and unpredictable housekeeping standards. The following list of rental apartments in Paris includes both agencies that specialize in renting well-screened apartments (often for the expat investors who rarely use them) as well as a handful of designer spaces where you can make yourself at home without worrying about your absent host's mail, cat, or unreliable Wi-Fi. These top rentable Paris apartments are for those who are tired of dealing with the crazies on Craigslist — including luxury digs with an Eiffel Tower view and a hip, new affordable space by Stella Cadente designer Stanislassia Klein that's on the Canal St-Martin. map »

Spain has "smashed" a Russian ring of prostitution with gangs based in both the north-east and south of the country, leading to the arrest of 76 people and the detention of 400 women whose citizenship was questionable. "Russian-Spanish couples - married or cohabitating - were involved in the sex trafficking, police said." Money earned from the sex ring that went to Russia may have totaled over 2m euros (3.4 million USD). [BBC]

Berlin

Pope Bennie's Berlin Vacation

benniesberlin.jpg Babylon on the Spree has been all atwitter this past week with the news that Pope Benedict XVI is planning to visit Berlin sometime next year. Big Bennie's visit, ostensibly to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, will mark the third time he has returned to Germany since becoming Pope, but it would be his first time in Berlin. Born in Bavaria in southern Germany in 1927, Bennie visited his childhood home two years ago and even made it to Cologne back in 2005 to hang with the homeboys as part of World Youth Day. Since then, eighty-year old Pope hasn't been traveling much, spending most of his time dictating his memoirs to a cat named Chico. But just like the rest of us sinners, he has difficulty passing up an all-expenses paid junket in Berlin. Like every other newbie in the city, Bennie is sure to hit Berlin's notorious hot spots — the after hours parties, fetish clubs, and dimly lit backroom bars which keep Berlin humming all night long — while the daylight hours will be filled banging out emails and sipping milchkaffee or shopping for fabulous new Pope-wear in Mitte's fashion-shocked frock shops. God knows he's got the budget! But there is just so much to see and do in the city, and tourists (even those with a direct line to Mr. Big) are always running short on time, so we thought we'd help His Holiness by pointing out the places that are definite must-sees for every new Pope in town. map »

Lali, the baby born with two faces in the northern Indian village of Saini Sunpura near New Delhi, is doing well, her father told the Associated Press. She has been "worshipped as the reincarnation of [the] Hindu goddess," Durga, who represents valor and is typically depicted as having multiple arms. Lali seems healthy and happy, drinking milk from both mouths and blinking all four eyes at the same time. [CNN]

New York's Oldest Bars

Oldest%20Bars%20in%20New%20Y%20ork.jpg A while back we rounded up LA's oldest bars, most of which are pushing the century mark. But now it's NYC's turn to weigh in with our own long history of drunken immigrants, downtown hookers, and esteemed literati. We might have nothing on all the ancient European drinking wells, but New York still has some old-ass bars, and we've compiled a list of the oldest based on when they started serving booze (as opposed to when their buildings were raised). And just for the hell of it we've indicated which president was in office at the time each bar was founded. Feel free to recommend additional frothy relics or question our historical accuracy in the comments or via the tipline.
